do all 4 tires need to be changed?

My two rear tires have some wear so i want to change them out. But my question is if all 4 tires need to be changed, or if it doesn't matter as long as they're the same size. Any help is greatly appreciated.

yes they do. Slight offsets are okay - but nuthing big, You can get the tires trimmed so they'll match your 2 front ones but if they're warn as well - might as well get new tires. 4 of them =D.

unfortunately, with the awd, you must keep all the tires at the same tread wear. so if the rears are really worn out, youll have to get fronts too. the beauty of awd huh? -_-

pwnx0rz actually its ok the use new and used tires as long as htey are within 3/32 of each other. example. front used : 5/32, rear new: 8/32 difference is 3/32 which is ok. if it were 5/32 and a new tires thread is at 10/32 you will have to replace all 4 but you can keep the frotn as spare tires at home just incase something happens

what happens if the tires are incompatible? My rears are almost bald, and the fronts are at about 60%. Should I not be driving around like this?

yea do your best to not drive around. and i recommend just replacing all 4 and trash the rear tires and just keep the front tires as extra tires at home. and it looks like the person you bought your car from didnt do a good maitence on rotating tires. you rotate your tires every oil change to equally distribute the wear. bring the front to the back and the back to the front.

Make sure you have the same tire on all 4.

4. Do I have to replace all four tires on my AWD Subaru?
All of the tires on your AWD Subaru must be within 1/4 of an inch of rolling circumference (part that touches the road). This is because of our All Wheel Drive System.

Proper rotation of the tires at the appropriate service intervals will increase the life expectancy of your tires. This will also ensure that all four tires stay relatively equal in their tire tread wear. When vehicles are serviced, tires should be routinely checked to ensure that the alignment and tires are in good working

Use a tread depth gage.
Most auto parts stores carry 'em.
