DO NOT use the spray-on/rinse-off cleaners on the WRX stock wheels; the paint is extremely fragile. Use a PH-balanced cleaner, and do one wheel at a time and keep the wheel continuously wet. Don't let the cleaner dry on the wheel, even for a second. I had the finish destroyed on all four of my wheels by some idiot at a hand-wash carwash who sprayed them with cleaner and then walked away for just five minutes...
I used citrous based degreaser on my wheels (don't remember what brand) and the brake dust and dirt came off really easily and I say no effect on the paint. I probably would'be used a wheel cleaner but didn't have any around and my wheels were lookin kinda ugly so I tried it, and I like the results so until I run out I'll keep using it (or until I find out that its bad for the wheels)
Citrus degreasers are only mildly acidic. The really nasty ones that can damage your paint are 1) any cleaner meant for chrome or steel wheels or 2) anything phosphate-based. Also, keeping the wheel wet and doing one wheel at a time is more important than the type of cleaner you use, in my experience.
