225-50 on stock 16s?

I'm looking at some performance all seasons, wondering how wide I can go on the wrx stockers, i'm runnig an 02 wagon.

the tires i've been looking at are the

continental extremes
falken 512's (right?)
BFG traction T/A

do you think 225's will be too wide for the stock rims? Should I go with 215's?

thanks for your input.

215s on 16" rims you can't get a matching outer diameter as stock and so you would have a messed up speedo and such. plus a larger wheel gap from the smaller diameter tire. as for 225s, i have seen people put them on stock wheels before. however, not sure if you will have rubbing issues since you have a wagon, that i don't know about.

ish— thanks for the quick response. I guess that 225's will fit. But rubbing is the concern? Anyone running 225's on stocks on a wagon? Thanks again.

the 215's i'm looking at are a 55 series, pretty close to stock in diamater.

215/55s will be taller than OE, but I'd recon they would work fine (I've seen 235/45/17s on wagons, & 215/55s are just as tall). 225/50s would be better and mine never rubbed. I had 225/50/16 Bridgestone RE 950s.

Thanks all! Looks like 225-50's it will be. I'd like a wider tire anyways. And they are cheaper as far as Tirerack is concerned.

Now it's time to save for some Kumho MX's for my SDR's!

Sorry to hijack, but I have 225/50/16 Pirelli P Zero Nero M+S on my sedan and they work fine. And they look better too. It's a great step up from the stockers.

Thanks for all the replies. I just bit the bullet and ordered some 225/50 r16 Continental Extreme Contacts from TireRack. Once I get them installed I'll post about fitment.

so you guys dont mind the bugly look on the stock rims? I'm thinking of putting some 225/50/16's on my stock 01 rs rims ( i have a GC coupe) and i guess would be concerned with the same rubbing issues as a wagon. MIne would be lowered on prodrive p1 springs/agx struts, lowers 1" front and 1.2" rear.

Do you guys think this is wise???

I have had no rubbing issues. If i were to load the back of my wagon so that it would drop 1.2 inches i don't think there would be any issues either. But it still isn't a RS so I could be totally wrong. I do however like the beefy look of the tires on the 16s.

The meatier 225's look meaner and therefore cooler IMHO
Just for reference, I've got Bridgestone Potenza RE750's on my WRX stockers (sedan).

I just realized that the wrx stockers are only 6.5" wide versus the 01 rs rims are 7" wide. Maybe the 225's won't look as bulky (protrude from the side compared to the rim). I just have to worry about rubbing issues. Thanks guys
