My tires i have on right now are the stocker 215/45/17
can i go to 205? i have ran 225 for racing but i dont know if i can go smaller. i have heard i can but insight to help would be great.

p.s. one more thing. If i go 205/40/17 will my speedo be off even with only 5mm difference. if so about how much?

How much bigger can I go?

205/40-17 is way too small!
http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html
08 WRX has 205/50-17 on 17x7. 205/45-17 may also work. Smaller tire width is usually better for winter/snow use... what kind of Nitto tires are these?

I DID answer your question. I said 08 WRX has 205/50-17 on 17x7... so YES it will fit.
205/40-17 is ideal for 7.5" width but fits 7-8" width.
215/45-17 has 24.6" diameter & 205/40-17 has 23.5" diameter... that's 1.1" difference!
You said you had a blow out... are you changing ALL 4 tires or JUST 1 tire? Either way is bad for you. Plus, mounting & balancing the tire twice... waste of labor. How far do you need to drive everyday? Can't you just use the spare donut for 2.5 weeks? How about charging the credit card to purchase new tires? You have about 1 month before being charged interest, no? Just trying to help here...

#2 yes changing all 4. i would never change one. i did 4 with a fwd and would only do 4 with awd.
#3 Have my own tire machine and balancer. and got a compressor to make life easier. I bust my own tires and after having 2 tire places forget to tighten lug nuts i will never let another shop touch them... not even the dealership. All i am worried about is messing up the white rims.
#4 I am finally paying the credit card off and 150 for a set of 4 nitto neo gens with 4,000 miles on them is alot cheaper than 500 for my falkens or yokohama which ever way i go. Plus equals spare set for future mishaps.
#5 I will never ever ever drive on a donut unless I am on the side of the freeway with a blow out...which i did. drove it for 3.2 miles home and promptly put car in garage and havent driven since.
#6 I drive anywhere between 60-100 miles round trip everyday depending on where I am working. I do construction so i go where the work is.
Thank you for the advice I am not ungreatful I needed a definitive yes or no. not a "those are way too small."
