You have much to learn...

If you don't really have a preference other than the body style, you should find your car rather quickly. (You)

However on the flip-side, if you know exactly what you want and won't settle for anything else, it will probably take you a while to find your car. (Me)

The thing that really throws up the red flag here is the fact that you are looking to get an RS for $5,000. You are not going to find it here or any other enthusiast forum. The enthusiasts usually take car of their cars and keep them in pristine condition, with means that when they sell their car they are going to want more than average for it.

To find a RS for less than $5,000 it would have to be hella old and hella ****ed up and an enthusiast will not be driving it.

Basically what I am saying is that you are looking in the wrong places. The best place to find what you are looking for would probably be Craigslist, parked on the street with a "For Sale" sign in the window, and of course, the junkyard.

If you are really serious about having a kick-*** RS and possibly doing an engine swap, I would recommend the junkyard. Get a cheap shell, a cheap engine, and go from there.

But wait, there's more!

If you check out Craigslist right now, there is a fair amount of second generation Legacy's out there that are in great shape and they are going for about $4,500. If you really want a Subaru, to have a Subaru I would recommend a Legacy. I started out with a Legacy Outback and that thing was great, they are easy to control, easy to save, and if you do wreck there is a high probability that you will be able to walk away. (If you don't believe me I can show you some pics of my LOB as it was on the last day I saw it.)
