The Retrofit Source sells full setups. You need to change the optics as well, you can't just install an HID kit.

you can listen to brfatal if you want to be 100% legal but its not necessary if you dont care, as most people dont. you can buy an hid kit and make it work without modifications and have it be fine. He's always quick to jump the gun and give the wrong impression because you dont NEED to change anything. It'd be better for the other drivers if you did though. He's implying its better to get a retrofit kit with hids already installed that are made to be legit.

if you wanna just buy and hid kit and install it yourself:
DDM Tuning

+1. i deff need proj type lenses on mine for my projector retrofit. and u can tell the lens differences with the projectors vs stock halogens. yet, i still get that crisp cut off and not many people have complaning about it. to each his own, deff more $$ to do it the "legit" way. but if you are on a budget or what not, just throw some HIDs in there, restore headlight lenses and youll be good to go. if its not "good enough" for you, take em out and spend the extra cash. no biggie. you never know a definite answer or your true taste unless u actually do it.

I'm implying that it's the the only way you could probably get away with it if you get pulled over and ticketed for it (HIDs kits are 50-state illegal). Chances are low, but it's illegal for a reason. HIDs will glare and hinder other drivers' vision unless you do a complete retrofit including changing the optics. It's not a matter of "you can do it this way and do it more legit, or if you're on a budget do it this way", it's "do it right or you shouldn't do it at all". The only budget version of an HID conversion is DIY rather than paying someone else to build them for you.

It may be illegal, but by definition so is pretty much every mod. There are so so many cars running aftermarket hid kits in halogen housings that its really a non issue. How many people have you heard of being pulled over for hids? I know I haven't heard of any...

Op, I also use DDM Tuning for my hid kits. They will plug directly into your oem headlight harness. Plug and play.

Well, at least you don't own a car WITH reflector housing and putting HIDs in them....

I'd say go for it if you'd like, but know you may get a ticket due to installing hids

For every mod, there are people who will agree/disagree with your actions, but i'd tell you, its your car, do what you like.

Having a friend with an '08 WRX w/ HIDs I do hate driving in front of him as they do reflect off my mirror and into my face. Advocating plug-and-play kits without fixing the root problem is not the way to go about things. There comes a point when you want to teach people how to correctly install a given mod, even if it's not the answer they wanted to hear (that it will cost more money). Though you'd surprised, a retrofit can be done for incredibly low cost if you do the work yourself, and the results are ridiculously better than putting a kit in your stock headlights. You get a better spread (fewer hot and cold spots), a better cut off, more light on the ground where it belongs, and you get more light down range where it really matters.

Thanks man. I'm thinking about it still, but I will consider that. Even if I don't change optics right away, I will eventually, because it sounds like a bit of a problem. But I probably will start with the "plug and play" thing. Thanks again!

My comparison on people saying if you're on a budget that it's ok is comparable to someone asking how to lower their car and people chiming in that if you're low on money that it's ok to cut your springs. Sure, it works...but it's far from the best idea.
