Boost Issues w/ XEDE stg 1

I'm continuing to have tuning issues. If you've read my previous threads, I may have been going about tuning the wrong way. Instead of focusing on the timing, it looks like the car has been overboosting (>0.12 Mpa).

My car is at stage 1 (XEDE) and is running the stock turbo w/ the stock restrictor. I have the alcy injection turned off (unplugged). I've reset the ecu many times.

Back to basics:
Am I supposed to be targeting a boost of 0.12Mpa? With the stage 1 map, my boost is climbing up to 0.14 Mpa on my boost gauge. I've tried scaling the boost (0-100%) values back with little effect.

Yesterday, I flashed the valet map and it can boost 0.06 Mpa. If I take info on the xede maps literally, I should not be getting any boost with the valet maps. (Map 4,Boost values set to 0%=no boost???).

Any ideas of where I need to troubleshoot to drop the boost down to what it needs to be? (I presume the target is 0.12Mpa for stage 1). Could it be a problem with the stock boost controller?

Help appreciated.

Thank you for your response and questions.

Here's more on my set-up.
Vehicle is an Automatic 03 WRX.
Turbo XS TBE w/ high flow cat
Turbo XS UP
STI injectors. (Xede settings MAF = 0.938, MAP = 1.00)
Vishnu Intercooler Hoses.
My boost gauge is a GReddy boost gauge.

This afternoon;
1) I took off the intercooler, checked all of the Vishnu intercooler hoses and clamps. Everything seems to be tightened and in proper position.
2) Took it for a drive around the block. When casually giving it gas, the boost can climb up and peak at 0.13Mpa.
3) If I stomp on the gas, boost will increase to 0.14Mpa
4) I inspected the boost lines which are stock. I changed the lines about the tee (w/ the little stock in-line restrictor on the wastegate side). Boost builds to 0.06 Mpa.
5) Then I switched the lines back (little restrictor on the compressor side). The boost behaves as stated above.

Additional observations:
1) The EGT's climb rapidly under partial boost up to 700C. When stomping on the gas (say passing situation on the highway), the EGT's can easily climb above 800C. EGT bung is drilled into (within 2") of where the UP attaches to the headers.
2) At idle, and after a couple of light runs, the car sounds like it is slightly choking (like it is going to die).
3) Started car this morning to CEL 00171.

Enclosing a copy of an example xede logs
stg1-02 was from a 2nd gear pull
stg2-03 was from a 1-2 gear pull

Any help/guidance and continued questions, is/are appreciated.

Holycow ....
I think Stage 1 by default is tuned to using the Stock injectors (different flowrate compared to STi pink injectors). I think you may need to tune the duty cycle for the injectors ....... or aleast the map for it .... I would assume you would run rich with the current setup you have?

Actually, that's what setting the MAF to 0.938 is supposed to accomplish (account for the different injectors.)

However, I'm contemplating pulling off the STI injectors so I'd be a Stage 1.

Was wondering what David has for me about the tuning though. Did you get what you need with respect to the boost curve.

I'm still running the STG 1 map.

Tonight, I swapped out the STI injectors and installed the blues (sotck wrx injectors). With the wrx injectors, I reset theat MAF scale to 1.000.

I took the car for a spin and same (over boosting) as before. At least I didn't throw a code tonight but still get knock when under throttle. (definately at WOT, haven't checked all of the load points though.)

After a few runs and globally changing the boost curve (-15%) increments, I'm still boosting pretty high and get knock when under throttle.

Please help!!! I'm running out of possibilities.

Are those values that you listed for the STI or WRX injectors?

Before I read your post, I took the car again. When I had turned the engine on, I got a PO171.

EDIT: (reference STG 1 (90 oct) base map)
No changes were made to the timing map. I increased fueling by adding 0.4 to each of cell in the MAF map to (old -1.0 values becomes -0.6). The extra fuel seems to be helping a bit. Also, I decreased the values on the MAP (0-100%) by 30%. The car is still boosting to 0.14Mpa according to the GREDDY gauge. However, changing the MAP doesn't seem to affect the boost.

In response to your question, I took out the STI injectors because I wasn't getting answers (I feel like I've been going about this alone for many months). If it's better to run the STI injectors, I can reinstall them over the next couple of days. I was getting CEL codes (misfire in cylinders; codes were PO310 and PO303 or PO302 and PO304) and am getting CEL's (P0171)that the car is running too lean. Seems like I need to add fuel or decrease boost! This needs to be resolved.

Take a look at my posts. In one post, it said to trim the timing back 4 degrees. I did that and the car ran crappy and it didn't cure the knock. Now that I'm reading everything up on the XEDE at Nasioc, Clubwrx and i-club it seems like the timing adjustment is something you do after you get the proper boost curve. I would buy your argument about out of spec gauges but it doesn't change the presence of knock and the CEL codes.

Ok, so now what should I do/fix/replace? Everything seems to be pinting to the overboosting. I guess I'm thinking (various options):
1) burnt out front o2 sensor (MAP IN signals are way higher than the MAP out values)
2) reinstall the STI-injectors
3) take out the walbro fuel pump, install the stocker pump.
4) boost control solenoid
5) other

This has been updated w/ edits.

Again, with the STG 1 map (90 oct), with no timing adjust, MAF values changed by adding in 0.4, and MAP values decreased 30%, MAP and MAF scale set at 1.000.

I just got back from some errands.
1) I started up the car and the car ran really rough. I got to my first stop, shut off the car and went inside.
2) Came outside, started up the car and it was running a lot better. Had quite a bit of turbo lag but the car ran a lot better. Went to my second destination and turned off the car.
3) Came outside, started up the car and it is pulling strong.

So far, no CEL’s, but the xede is still showing knock retard of 1 when giving it some throttle. The ECU doesn't seem to be battling with the XEDE as much now (They seemed to be wanting to do different things before.) Also, it seems more stable at an idle (not like its on the edge of dying).

Car is still boosting towards 0.14Mpa.

I would like to:
A) have some feedback/remedies for the overboosting. The changes on the xede boost map don't seem to affect the boost. It's like the xede isn't controlling the boost.
B) have clarification on, "If the datalogs show knock retard of 1, does that mean the car is knocking?"

Ok, I've been driving a few days without the P0171 and the P030X's. I still get the other CEL's P0420, and P0546.

As you all know, I've been looking for answers. At nasioc I found.
http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show...ht=boost+creep
The boost creep issue seems consistant with what I'm seeing. So is the bellmouth design contributing to the problem seen by others with the 4EAT?

1) Ok, so will the vishnu divorced downpipe solve my problem? I'm curious if it measures out the same (length wise) as the TXS downpipe. Or would I need to get the entire Vishnu exhaust?
2) Should I pull more out of the MAP.
3) I could add more restriction by installing the stock exhaust.

With the MAF and MAP set at 1.00, I lowered my boost values in the boost MAP by %30. This is the maps that I'm driving now.

Previously, I used the valet MAP and observed boost on the gauge of 0.06Mpa. I can try that again now that I'm not getting the p0171 and p0301, p0302, po303, and p0304 cel's, anymore. Or I can set all the boost map values to zero and try that.

This overboosting seems to be occurring when I'm in 3rd gear; or if I do a light rally style driving in that the first time, boost will hit 0.12Mpa, next throttle burst, it will climb to 0.13MPA and subsequent throttle bursts can go over 0.14Mpa. It's like it can't hold a peak boost through the gears or through a series of throttle applications.

I'm done with the car today. Tomorrow, what should I do.
1) try to pull more boost out of the boost map. I can try stg1 map values - 50% and stg1 - 75%.
2) trade out ther TXS downpipe for the stocker
3) other, but please specify.
I look forward to your response.

I don't know if this helps, but for the time being if I were you, I would reload the Stage 1 map on the Xede and try again. Also, have you done the 3/16th mod on the boostline? If that doesn't help, with your current setup (stock injectors), I would pull the Xede out and drive the car without it. I will work fine as I have done this in the past. Your current setup (ie, uppipe, TBE, intercooler hoses and fuel pump) should work fine with the stock ECU. Vishnu stage 1 also mentions a Vishnu underdrive pulley, but I don't think that plays a significant role in tuning. BTW, if you are interested I'm selling my Vishnu underdrive pulley as my car is going back to stock. PM me if you are interested. I'ld rather be safe with the stock map than sorry ....

David:

I agree, I don’t need to keep throwing money at this problem (buying a bunch of replacement parts). However, I need to get it resolved.

Do you have delta dash software in stock. Would this software help me to diagnoses/fix/ or solve these problems?

Info appreciated. If this was your car, what would you do? I need ideas.

I changed the BOOST map so that the boost values were zero. When I took the car for a drive, my boost still climbs like it has in the previous posts (no significant reduction in boost).

As one looks at the BOOST maps in stages Subzero through STG1 (same octane), you will notice that the boost map values are higher in the subzero maps than the STG1 maps. Is this because at stg 1, the exhaust is free flowing and doesn’t have to work as hard to achieve the desired boost when compared to stage zero? I would think you would decrease the boost map values to decrease the boost. But this experiment just isn’t working.

One can change the BOOST map values +/- 100%. On the VISHNU website (XEDE PAGE for WRX), they state, “In intercept mode, instead of inputting actual duty cycle values, you input offset to stock. For example, if you want 83.6% of factory boost at 5000RPM, you simply put "83.6%" in the 5000RPM cell in your boost map.“ What does all this mean. When does one use the negative numbers in the boost map? If I were to use higher numbers say 100% in the BOOST map with the stage 1, wouldn’t this cause higher boosting? Maybe it is limited by the turbos ability at some point.
