since the last tune you told me my injectors were pretty much maxed out.and since im going to have to start over with the tune i figure ill get a set of 850cc.and with an injector change is there an intake you would suggest over my cobb sf setup?possibly a aps or amr cai?larger intake?ks tech 73mm? let me know asap.i have the injectors lined up and want to get a new intake if needed asap.i figure tune right after jan 8th |
That's an awesome deal for the custom tune. I wish I was local so I could have mine done. What's the most power you've gotten from a GT35 set-up on a stock motor?

07 STI with APS Catless TBE, Walbro, Hallman MBC, EQ Custom Flash on 91 Octane: -- Ed |
Here's another 07 STI with Catted TBE, APS 65mm CAI, Inlet, Walbro, MBC, Tuned with Cobb AP V2:

This is a really nice 04 STI we've been working on. This car has:
EQ Stage 1 Shortblock Tomei ARMS 20G Variant Turbo Tomei Headers Tomei Cams Catted TBE APS 65mm CAI, Inlet PE850cc Injectors Walbro MBC EQ Custom Tune on 91 Octane This car came out really nice. The turbo spools up very quickly and carries power well to redline. Thanks -- Ed |
Here's a really high power VF39 car! This is an 04 STI with an APS FMIC, Injen CAI, Catless TBE, Walbro, MBC, Tuned on 91 Octane in very cold weather (46F):

This is an 02 WRX that we had in last week. We swapped out his loud BPM TBE for a nice stealthy MadDad TBE with high flow cat. Then of course it was time for a re-tune. This car has:
MadDad Whisper TBE (Catted) Cobb SF Intake Inlet Y-Pipe Hallman MBC EQ Custom Tune on 91 Octane: This made really nice power for a quiet, catted setup! -- Ed |
This is an 05 WRX that we finalized yesterday. We tried to tune this car before, but the Blouch turbo was having some major boost creep. So ported the wastegate for the customer and everything works great now. This car has:
Blouch Big 16G DW650cc Injectors APS 65mm CAI STI TMIC Perrin Inlet Walbro Hallman MBC EQ Custom Tune on 91 Octane: Thanks -- Ed |
Here is a 2008 STI I tuned today:
Perrin Catted DP Magnaflow Catback Perrin Inlet Perrin Intake MadDad EL Headers/UP AVO Fuel Pump Hallman MBC EQ Custom Tune using Cobb AP V2 This was tuned on 91 Octane in about 55F weather. Peak boost is set at 19.5psi: I've been getting more and more stock turbo cars approaching the 300whp mark lately. The nice cold weather certainly helps with that, but I also believe we're starting to see better and more consistent setups all around. Thanks -- Ed |

This is an 04 WRX with an EQ Stage 1 Shortblock and EQ CNC Machined EJ205 heads. This car has a VF43, DW750cc injectors, and supporting mods:
[img]https://www.i-club.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=71623&d=1266807415[/img] While the power levels and curves are great all around, the really impressive part is in how the car tuned out, feels and drives. The new combustion chamber design allowed for a lot more timing advance in the mid range which really helped fill out the torque curve and also really helped with the extremely smooth drivability and response that these motors are exhibiting. I have tuned a lot of different hybrid setups in the past and I honestly have never felt any other hybrid drive as smoothly and consistently as these builds have been running. Thanks -- Ed |
See you on Monday Ed!!
^Seriously. Nice to get a graph like that after adding such few mods. No reason to be jealous of Evos anymore (with regard to $/HP increase). How dependable are they though?
Yeah something like this - - Invidia Catless TBE - $720 - Walbro Fuel Pump - $30 - Hallman Pro RX MBC - $100 - EQ Tuning Custom Tune at 18.5psi peak. Less than $850 worth of parts... :surprise: And I'm sure it's dependable considering they're running the VF52's now instead of the TD04. I almost feel ripped off by Subaru for that lol. But oh well that's life. |
As far as dependibililty, I was wondering about the drivetrain. Stage Two 2L WRX's only see like 210-220 WHP. The 09 is apparently getting almost 100 WHP/WTQ more out of a stage two setup. I'm just wondering if the gearbox, motor, etc. will last 100K miles plus with a setup like that.
I'm at 120K miles with no sign of any issues (knock on wood) and I've been stage II and autocrossing for 4 years (this will be my 5th). I'd really consider a new WRX if it's shown to be as dependable as my car has. |
The transmission is supposed to be a bit stronger in the 09, but I think its too early to say how much stronger. The engine is the same ol 2.5l with same ol crappy pistons. If you're lucky, it'll hold on fine, if not a ringland can crack. That's the nature of the stock 2.5's in general.
Thanks -- Ed |
Thanks Ed. Makes me think I'm better off just doing a swap on mine someday. What's your opinion on hybrid setups? I've heard mixed opinions.

Sure, we offer tuning with Cobb AP V1/V2, OpenEcu, or any standalone. If your car has relatively basic mods, the quick tune will cost $275. Give us a call so we can go over your setup, make any possible recommendations, and get you scheduled for the tune. Thanks -- Ed |

Sure, I would highly recommend going with Deatschwerks injectors in general. You will need at least a 650-700cc injector for that turbo, but I would just go with a set of 850's so you have some head room for the future. The extra flow capability of these injectors won't hurt anything else in terms of drivability or fuel economy. Give us a call if you'd like to order these as we have some decent pricing on them. Thanks -- Ed |

Guess we are. I have 850cc injectors that I had bought, but for sure they are to small for E85. So before I get them installed and tuned for 91 thought let me ask Ed and see what he says. I rather just have the headroom for an E85 tune later. Sucks that we are so limited with sidefeeds. |

Dont feel bad I have 740cc's! |
850's will likely be a bit too small. 1000's or 1200's should do ok with that turbo. The problem, as you guys said, is the poor selection of side feeds. We've been testing some DW 1000cc sidefeeds and they're working very well. We've been bugging them about a real release date, but haven't heard anything concrete yet. Although I know they are trying to get them out ASAP.
The other option is the injector dynamics conversion kit. Their 2000cc injectors are VERY nice and the conversion kit looks pretty damn nice. The only problem is that you will still have to make all your own lines to fit up to their rails. This will add on quite a bit of cost to an already relatively expensive setup. But if you have the money, that's the route I would go. -- Ed |

Guess Ill be awating awhile for sidefeed DW 1000cc injectors. Hope that they come out with them soon though. Ive seen that conversion setup and it does look really nice. They also have the plug and play option for a little more so you dont have to deal with splicing any wires.
This is the setup your talking about correct^^^ |
Yep that's the one. And you don't actually have to splice any wires anyway. You can just de-pin and re-pin the connectors ;).

Hi Ed,
Which of your tuning options might suit my needs best: 09 WRX with Cobb catted DP, stock CB exhaust for now (will either stay with the stock CB or SPT or some other quiet system-liking the fact that it's just as quiet as stock right now). This is a daily driver 25-30k miles a year and want safety and reliability-yet still more fun than stock I am currently running the ots Cobb stage 2 map for now. I know you recommend a MBC, would there be much of a disadvantage without it? Also an upgraded fuel pump may be needed. Let me know, thanks. And did Johndabrit get tuned with the Perrin TMIC yet? I sold it to him. Paul |

I sold it to him. Paul
I generally recommend the complete custom tune, especially for the newer platforms as I don't have as much of a map base for them. The MBC has very significant advantage in response and drivability as well as boost consistency and stability. We can certainly tune with out it, but its a great mod for the money and why we recommend it so highly. A fuel pump is a very good idea as well. About 40% of the cars end up needing one at stage 2 power levels anyway. John is waiting on the new turbo before the tune. Thanks -- Ed |
Ed tuned my 2010 STI last week. Relevant mods, both installed for the tune:
- high-flow catted downpipe - Hallman MBC The response from the turbo is so much better it almost makes the factory setup feel like a joke. Stock it felt like the ECU wouldn't let the turbo spool unless I was deep in the throttle, even at higher RPMs. Passing in particular was often frustrating and sometimes unsafe. The added power is great too, and is very obvious on the freeway and empty side roads. But it's the better response that really stands out everywhere, at any speed. Here's the before (completely stock) and after curves. - 91 octane - ambient temps around 81-82F - final MBC setting of about 18-18.5 PSI Ed said the stock tune was maxing out the injectors making that beastly 198whp, which explains why I'm now getting about 2 extra MPG on my commute, in addition to the 58 extra WHP. (Actual mileage, not relying on the trip computer's MPG reading.) I know nobody with an STI is terribly concerned about mileage, I just find the difference amusing :) |
Thanks Matt. I'm glad you're enjoying the tune! Your car was one of the lowest stock baseline STI's I've seen to date!
