Why a '98? Just curious because your search is going to be a lot harder (much less of them produced) and IMO, not the best year to buy...
The interior is much nicer in '99-01. The engine is considered to me much improved after '98, and '00-'01 adds an LSD to the rear end.

DOHC was not a good thing for the ej25... Unless you are planning on doing some radical engine builds (replacing both cams and taking advantage of the ability to tune the exhaust timing independently) it still doesn't make sence.
Let us know if you really have some questions about the model years - you may already know a ton about Imprezas, but if not this is a pretty good place for info.

Im quite happy with my 98 thank you very much...no problems with the dohc and never blew a maf unlike many 99 owners. And what improvements of the sohc besides 2 extra hp.
There is nothing wrong with the 98 interior as well PLUS we 98's have old style black face guages instead of those "look at me" whites. So we dont have red stitching and a o-shlt handle, big deal.
I think the 98 we a very rare and exotic year for the impreza, many firsts and one of a kind parts. I'm holding on to mine for a future collecters item being its basicly the introduction to the WRX.

Ack... nothing personal - your car is just fine.
All GC8's are great.
Just making sure the guy knew what he was really looking at. If you added up everyhting about the four model years, would the '98 come out as the most desirable model year? Being the most rare may just makes it harder to find quality used ones...
