insurance in Jersey
Ok, I first moved to Jersey in september. My WRX is registered in FL. I bought a Prius as a second car/work car because I drive a lot for work and I wanted to keep the miles off the WRX. Insurance on the Prius is killing me. I'm with State Farm now and the hemmorage of cash is over $6000 a year. I have one ticket on my record and my statements show it as 2 points. I really don't think I should be paying this much. Any suggestions on preferred insurance companies? I would like to transfer the Subaru to NJ too, but if it's gonna cost me thousands of dollars I'll just keep it registered in FL and not have to put a license plate on the front.

I have Ins in NJ, born raised and still living here! I have insurance with Geico. For full coverage on my sedan I pay about $2100/year, with my car recently paid off though I'll be restructuring my Ins coverage.
The qoute was comparable with the likes of Liberty Mutual (via AAA discount), Mecurury, and All-State to name a few. Geico offers online qoutes and plicy management after selecting a policy, something that I haven't seen anyother insurance company offer in NJ...I have some posts on a similar question you're asking here...Check in the WRX Theft thread started by McDade!

If you have only two points, you can take a safe driver course and get those points removed. I think the course costs about $200. It does work. I haven't had to do it yet, but I know a bunch of people who have. Just look online for places in your area that offer the class. It usually is offered from the major driving schools. Takes one saturday afternoon. That should bring your costs down a bit, but NJ is kinda weird with insurance.
The deal is, if you are new to the insurance company and NJ at the same time, they usually have a 3 year period where you are under observation. It keeps you in a high risk tier even if you have no accidents or moving violations. At the end of 3 years it will go down tremendously. I have an 04 STI and had an 02 wrx before that. That was my first car I insured on my own. It has been 3 years now and last month I just got reduced from $5850 a year to $3200. That is the price for one car! It will be going down some more in September as well they tell me. I had no points, no tickets and no accidents.
Another way to reduce your bill is to raise your deductible on the cars from $500 to $1000. If you are a careful driver and not a maniac, you shouldn't have to worry. You only get hit with the deductible if it is your fault! Otherwise, the other car pays for it! That should bring down the bill alot as well!
I hope this was some help. Best of luck and just remember, it costs alot because Jersey is a cool palce and everyone wants to live here.
BIG POPULATION=HIGHER INSURANCE! Small price to pay to be one of the cool guys!

I started with Liberty Mutual (through AAA) then cut $600 by switching to NJRe (that's where NJM sticks you if they won't insure you themselves) then cut $1300 off that by switching to Geico.
NJM is the way to go if you can get in, but Geico is cheap also.

I don't think theres actually a "cheap" insurance company in New Jersey because, well, New Jersey sucks in the insurance department. A good way to keep in down is too crank up your deductible. If your paying $500 now then maybe make it $1,000 and see if that'll make it less per year. Also, if your gonna put your WRX on the insurance, tell them that you only drive it on the weekends. That should make the insurance on the WRX a lot less.

NJM isn't always an option, look on their website and check the list of companies that NJM offers their insurance to. You have to be employed by a company that NJM recognizes!

I'm 33 (soon to be 34) with wife (31) and child (9 mo.). We have one claim which resulted in an excused accident on file with State Farm. I own my own home and also have my homeowners insurance with State Farm. I drive a '05 Baja Turbo, and she has a '02 Outback ltd. Our premiums with $500 deductables (full coverage) are $2200 a year.

Also as anyone knows if you get a Ticket dispute it in court. Show up for the court date set and plead that you'll pay the amount of $$ fined and they'll (sometimes) drop the points from your driving record.
The over 30 years factor is Big here in NJ...my wife has State Farm and pays only $80.00 a month for a 99" Sentra. You usually get another reduction in your auto insurance at 30yrs. old if your driving record is in good standing.

If I lived in Jersey I would buy a piece of property in Alabama or something just to register my cars there. If you have a few cars here the money you pay on the mortgage woiuld be more than saved on the indurance. My friend has a Subaru WRX down there and full coverage w? $500 ded. is $450.00/ year. Why is insurance so much higher here, it's crazy.
To clarify my previous statements, I now know why insurance is so high in Jersey. 2 weeks ago some low rent pieces of garbage from the ghetto stole my 04 STI. I know this because they were last spotted in east Orange dumping out my personal belongings they didn't want on the side of the road in that town. Now, my insurance will go up along with everyone else. This is the only way they can afford to pay for my loss. Also, consider that there are alot of accidents in this state involving uninsured drivers. This hurts everyone as well because we pay for their accidents! It amazes me that we pay more because we happen to have more "low rent" people in our state than most others.
The laws need to change. My car was reported on a Thursday night in Bloomfield NJ and the police didn't do anything. I even tracked it with my ez-pass and they said they needed to file a report before they would do anything. Even if they caught the thieves, they almost always get off somehow. Either they are under age or they are not caught stealing the car. This only sees an offense of recieving stolen property. That means pretty much a slap on the wrist. How are we to enjoy a Subaru in this state? We pay thru the nose for insurance and then have to worry about the car gettin jacked. It took the thieves 4 minutes and they didn't even break the glass. Now they have my car that I worked so hard for and I get nowhere near what it is worth in a settlement! On top of all this, my insurance will go back up. What BS!

These are some of the reasons why insurance is so much in NJ:
more people + more cars + more accidents + inaccessibility to a good transit system + higher cost of living + low insurance Co. choices = Higher Insurance in NJ
NJ is the most densely populated state. In order to have good mobility in NJ you have to have a car, it's a neccessity you can't live without here. Get LoJack, move to Lower Central/Southern NJ(below New Brunswick, NJ) or drive something else daily.

Problem solved, I moved to Philly. I now pay the same amount here for two cars that I paid for one in NJ.
