Why is this man still alive?

We've known of Muqtada al-Sadr for some time now. He's been in the public eye on a couple of occasions yet we continue to let him live? Why does the United States let it escalate into a Shiite battle?

Radical Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr gestures during a news conference in his first public appearance since the new wave of fighting began in Najaf, southern Iraq (news - web sites) Monday Aug. 9, 2004. 'I will continue fighting,' al-Sadr told reporters. 'I will remain in Najaf city until the last drop of my blood has been spilled.'. Al-Sadr spoke as the devastating fighting between his Mahdi Army militia and U.S. and Iraqi forces persisted for a fifth day.

At the 360+ dead combatant rate i'm sure we'll eventually satisfy his wishes but it makes me mad knowing it came to this.

Well these goatherds love martyrs. I guess we are choosing not to give them one. Shiites are the majority in that country, and if we are going to get our way, we have to co-opt them. If he dies I wouldn't exactly shed a tear though.

Threatening the oil might get him whacked though. Oil revenues are pretty important to the new government. They aren't going to be able to live on Uncle Sam's handouts forever.

Nevermind i know why now...

His father was a radical who was killed by Saddam and we were hoping he would become an ally instead of a problem.
