UN Decides Gitmo Should Close

I already know what most of you think of the UN...but isn't this similar to how Saddam wouldn't let the UN inspectors check out his facilities?

No, it's not the same.
Saddam surrendered & signed a treaty allowing UN inspectors into Iraq.
As far as I know, the US has not surrendered to the UN.

Well, not yet, at least.

Ok...so IF saddam had not 'surrendered and signed a treaty', what do you think would have happened? We would have started the war sooner is all. So why is the US above UN inspections, while Iraq was not? As much as all you conservatives dis the UN, the US relys on it to justify our actions while ignoring any criticism the UN has for the US. If you ask me, we are the only thing wrong with the UN because we only recognize the UN's wishes when they align with ours...otherwise, we ignore them. We don't follow the rules, why would anyone else.

They said we should close Gitmo only in the case that we bar inspectors from going in; in other words, they don't want us to close Gitmo; they want us to open it to international inspection...and if we bar the international inspectors, then it should be closed...sounds so DAMN famililar...I could have sworn the UN gave that ultimatum in the time frame of the Iraq war or just before it...

What conditions? That the idiots are on a hunger strike? Let them starve, it's all a ploy for attention.

Were talking about inspection, which is what the senate has already done.

Exactly. From the UN (and international) point of view, they can't trust OUR senate to inspect OUR base and find anything wrong. I don't really blame them. What would it hurt to let UN inspectors into Gitmo? Unless we're violating international law...

Not even a valid comparison. You do realize TK and Kerry were there too, right?

Hey, all I'm saying is do the cost/benefit analysis. Option one: we let the UN inspect, they find nothing wrong (almost for certain), and this issue is gone forever. Cost? Almost zero. Benefit? The UN and most of our international allies will trust us more (very valuable). Option two: we don't let the UN inspect, we don't close Gitmo, and the UN gets ticked. Cost? The trust of the only internationally recognized body dedicated to world peace and the trust of our allies. Benefit? Nothing that I can see, except we get to flip the bird to the UN.

Why would we choose #2? Seriously...it's an easy choice...

True. I actually agree with what your saying, but the comparison to Saddam and WMD's is off base.
