well, what could they have done really? We dont understand their procedures, or their contacts. You can't really call southeast asia and yell "TSUNAMI!!!".
After ocean-earthquakes titalwaves happen - it is to be expected.
I've heard from some people here that their family in sri lanka got the warning nearly 2 hours in advance but party bro's and ho's on the beach IGNORED it. It's terrible, but it's nobodys fault and if some bleary eyed scientist gets blamed for millions of deaths - then the world can no longer take responsibilty for itself.

Why not?

It's not like they had to leave the countryside and clog the highways in pandemonium. All they had to do was get to higher ground. If they think it's a cry for wolf then ****'em.

I'm sure if someone screamed that U.S. Scientists suspect a massive tsunami that some people would have packed their coolers. It would have been worth the effort for one spared life.

They should aired the disaster on the U.S. emergency broadcast system. Then every Tom, Dick and Harry could have called India, Thailand and Sri Lanka on their pretty cellphones to loved tourists and family.

but we are talking about a wave that didn't take very long to reach shore. I think in some cases it took nearly 2 hours to get there, but in other considerably less.

agreed. But it's almost a blink in terms of organizing a massive multinational retreat into the hills. Like i said though - police came by the shores and told everyone to leave and the party people thought it would be fun to stay.

Really just a huge terrible ****ed up situation. It's not anyones fault.

Then what could our sleepy scientists here really accomplished had they called Sri lanka and told everyone a killer wave was 2 hours out? Sri lanka would have just shouted into their coconut phone and squinted at their lack of warning system.

Actually i think thats about what happened - but the very few people who heard the warnings didn't know how serious it was.

It still could have made a difference of 10,000+ deaths at this point.

Hell... the United States should have sent out an Emergency Broadcast across our TV set with Dell's tech support number and instructions to call. Surely they have a means of contacting someone that may be on the beach via phone.

Ok,...if you really believe that we didn't attempt to warn them,...I've got some beach front property I want to sell you....

The problem is with the countries own internal information decemination. There is a huge lack of it. That's the way it is in 3rd world countries.

Total donations up to 800 million!

United Nations officials said that the international community had pledged a combined half-a-billion dollars in support, and that figure jumped to more than $800 million Friday when the United States increased its pledge.
