There is a direct relationship. The more freedoms that are bestowed upon us (be it by our parents, school, govt, etc...), the more we need to hold ourselves accountable for our actions or indescretions.

Example: The city of Main Town, USA decides to abolish speed limits. Each person should be able to act safely and drive sensibly, so why police them? Well, in time people start behaving like idiots and break all the rules of the road. This leads to more accidents and a burden on the city. Because the personal responsibility was eschewed, the city govt had to pull the reigns tighter and impose more enforcable driving laws.

This is the great conundrum of modern US politics. On one hand we have Republicans who believe in less and less govt. People can take care of themselves, should be held responsible for their own actions, and shouldnt have to be forced to contribute to the greater good of the nation (and will do so by choice instead). Conversely, we have the Democrats who are in favor of higher taxes, taking into account systematic and socialized racism and oppression, and believe that people can only be held accountable to a certain extent, and that the govt should be there in case things go wrong.

I think it is in this aspect that your teacher is trying to pull some info from you. When you start working, you will be doing far more boring things that write papers like this. It sounds cheesy, but take advantage of that education whgile you are there.

Peace, and good luck on your paper!

The example of personal responsibility and free speech:

We all want the freedom to express ourselves, and want "free speech" so we can freely express our views. We are each personally responsible to act appropriately and within what's acceptable by society.

This freedom can be abused when people do not act responsibly, in such case as an individual screeming "fire" in a crowded theatre, exposing a breast on live television, or saying "Bush hates black people."
Unfortunately, the lack of personal responsibility justifiably results in punitive and preventative measures to be put into place, like strict fines and jail sentences.

People cried like little girls about the FCC clamping down on **** and filth after the Janet Jackson incident, but what did they expect? Maybe if the tatas were nicer, who knows???
