Got to love evoting machines

Subject: WORST EVER SECURITY FLAW FOUND IN DIEBOLD TS VOTING MACHINE

SACRAMENTO, CALIFORNIA -- “This may be the worst security flaw we have seen in touch screen voting machines,” says Open Voting Foundation president, Alan Dechert. Upon examining the inner workings of one of the most popular paperless touch screen voting machines used in public elections in the United States, it has been determined that with the flip of a single switch inside, the machine can behave in a completely different manner compared to the tested and certified version.

“Diebold has made the testing and certification process practically irrelevant,” according to Dechert. “If you have access to these machines and you want to rig an election, anything is possible with the Diebold TS -- and it could be done without leaving a trace. All you need is a screwdriver.” This model does not produce a voter verified paper trail so there is no way to check if the voter’s choices are accurately reflected in the tabulation.

Open Voting Foundation is releasing 22 high-resolution close up pictures of the system. This picture, in particular, shows a “BOOT AREA CONFIGURATION” chart painted on the system board.

The most serious issue is the ability to choose between "EPROM" and "FLASH" boot configurations. Both of these memory sources are present. All of the switches in question (JP2, JP3, JP8, SW2 and SW4) are physically present on the board. It is clear that this system can ship with live boot profiles in two locations, and switching back and forth could change literally everything regarding how the machine works and counts votes. This could be done before or after the so-called "Logic And Accuracy Tests".

A third possible profile could be field-added in minutes and selected in the "external flash" memory location, the interface for which is present on the motherboard.

This is not a minor variation from the previously documented attack point on the newer Diebold TSx. To its credit, the TSx can only contain one boot profile at a time. Diebold has ensured that it is extremely difficult to confirm what code is in a TSx (or TS) at any one time but it is at least theoretically possible to do so. But in the TS, a completely legal and certified set of files can be instantly overridden and illegal uncertified code be made dominant in the system, and then this situation can be reversed leaving the legal code dominant again in a matter of minutes.

“These findings underscore the need for open testing and certification. There is no way such a security vulnerability should be allowed. These systems should be recalled”

OPEN VOTING FOUNDATION is a nonprofit non stock California corporation dedicated to demonstrating the need for and benefits of voting technology that can be publicly scrutinized.

Be honest. Do you think there could have been foul play?

We live in a world where the media knows things before anyone else, even in war. The media reports on this after an organization finds out about the glitch after the 2004 election. I haven't been a fan of Bush pre 2004 and I didn't vote for him in 2004 either... but every time I see these stories I laugh.

I laugh especially hard about the types of stereotypes liberals and democrats tend to give republicans (you especially, dre). You label them as flag wearing, tobacco chewing, wealthy, Nascar loving evangelicals. So what does that make liberals and democrats? Incapable of using a computer to their advantage? I would think it’s just the opposite. Heck, even you are in this category and I suspect many more like you exist with similar views.

If this isn’t your point in posting this thread and it’s solely based on the need to eliminate machines, then yes, I agree…

Of course it's possible. Is it your contention that it's not possible that something could have occurred? Hell every election since 1875 could have been rigged but with a machine like this it is definately more likely.

All you have to do is load a config that counts like you would like it to and then in places where you have control over the voting precincts have them flip the switch, and at the end of the day flip it back after the tabulations have been sent in. It would literaly take 20 seconds and a screwdriver. Or you wouldn't even have to have a program loaded on the machine you could send it out with your "people" on a little flash drive and plug it into the machine, flip the switch and boot to the external drive, whammo instant fixed election. What amazes me is the ease at which someone could fix an election with this particular machine. Who knows if it happened or not but it is definately possible.

It doesn't help that the CEO of Diebold is one of Bush's major campaign contributors either. Whether it happened or not though doesn't matter because it is in the past and we are stuck with that JA as our president anyways, we may as well make the best of it.

The media did report Kerry ahead in Ohio, until strange things happened and W came out winning.

I wouldn't put anything past the criminals that have hijacked the GOP, nothing at all

Strange things? This is ridiculous. They even counted the votes by hand and Bush was still ahead by a six figure margin.

I think you're missing my point. It took a dedicated team two years (or more if they started after Florida 2000) to expose this flaw. Based on that alone it's highly improbible that any blow hard knew how to exploit the flaw during the election. The argument is flawed either way... if it's so easy then why didn't anyone for Kerry counter with more screwdrivers?

Experts on both the democratic and republican sides agree that there needs to be a better paper trail when using these machines. It's not a partisan issue; in fact, both sides agree that the potential for tampering with votes is scary as hell. In light of that truth, I think it's entirely possible that some foul play has occured, but also aknowledge that discussing it at this point is an exercise in frustration and futility; we just need to fix the system NOW for everyone's sake.

You cant count evoting machine output by hand btw.. there is no backup papertrail (did you even read the article?).

And i know of several voting stations that had open wireless networks, these were being used for transportation of vote coutns from the devices to the central tabulation servers.

any 14 yearold who has an internet connection and can google 802.11 MITM tool could have rigged that district.

aboslutely.. that is the point of this thread (even disregarding previous post about the insecurities present in the voting systems, this is just ANOTHER issue that has been brought to press)

Um there have been plenty of flaws esposed, before, during, and after the elections where these machines were used.
