Funny picture of me getting arrested

This took place in 1990 at a hearing regarding a proposed toxic waste incinerator to be built on tribal land outside of Phoenix.

I didn't know signs weren't allowed. I was the first one arrested, and then about fifteen more people got arrested.

Getting arrested at a protest is like a badge of honor for liberals .

You are to be commended on putting your money where your mouth is, as it were.
I hope that wasn't Maricopa County.
Did the local tribe want the incinerator?

I'm guessing Lojas wanted them to just bury it and let it seep into the groundwater.

Yup. That's maricopa's finest carrying me there.

I suppose. They were getting millions for it. The environmental impact was pushed through with no discussion, and it was upwind of Pheonix. Bad for the population, regardless of what the tribe wanted.

I am in favor of reducing the prevalance of the toxins at the outset. Aside from that....incineration away from heavily populated areas is better than adjacent to heavily populated areas.

I think everybody is. Do you know exactly what kind of waste was being incinerated (i.e. medical as in aborted fetuses, or solely chemical waste, etc?).

As far as I know, science has come a long way in the field of treating waste products... incineration, sewage treatment, etc. Supposedly you can drink the outflow from sewage treatment plants, but I'd rather not try it myself.

That's very long hair for a reservist. Did you have to tell your CoC you got arrested? Were charges filed? How did your CoC react? Not too happy I bet.

Gotta tip my hat to you...

You juggled being a weekend warrior and a hippy all in a four week span of pure hair growth.

I don't recall, to be honest.

Eh...this was fifteen years ago. Of course, Halliburton still can't figure out how to get drinking water that is not fecally contaminated to our troops so....

No charges were filed....they basically abducted us and removed us from the scene, dumping us in Tempe.

'twas not a protest. It was a public hearing regarding the potential environmental impact of the site.

A couple of comments.

First off, congratulations for sticking up and speaking out for what you believe in. You've earned a lot of respect from me for that.

Second, was this picture in the newspaper? Kinda odd for an early 90's picture. Looks like it could almost be from the 70's

I love the look on your face, it's perfect, and the position you're in. You look very relaxed. And the sandals are awesome. I mean this in a good way, but kinda stereotypical liberal

And the guy right above your head is pretty funny looking.
