I'm pretty sure the 10 Commandments count as "religion"

Does my religion not count because you think its silly? I know a lot of fundamental Christians who think that Hinduism and Buddhism are ridiculous. Where is the line to be drawn? There is no sub-clause of the establishment clause defining religion. Yes, there is a dictionary definition, but that still is pretty broad. My basketball belief may be really really heartfelt. Who are you to say I can’t believe in basketball?

The fact is, these people have a legitimate, heartfelt, religious belief. The ruling by the Supreme Court directly violates their first amendment right. They messed up.

FWIW, I believe the monument should be allowed. Furthermore, any religious monument should be allowed, as long as it adheres to the same rules and regulations any secular monument would have to abide by (height, width, materials) for a location. However, this is assuming that there are absolutely no public funds involved in the monument’s construction. In other words, if this proposed monument was going to use any public money, its off the table. But if it was all private dollars, it should be allowed. This, I believe, is the strategy most in keeping with the original intent of the founders.
I didn't say your religion was silly, I said basketball has no roots as a faith based entity. If you don't "believe" in basketball, you can still buy tickets and go to a game or watch it on TV. It's purpose is an athletic competition between people which is reinforced and governed by scripture such as the NBA rule book. The rules state nothing about believe or worship or faith.

That's like me trying to interpret Christianity as nothing more than an integrated basketball game. There's no reasonable comparison no matter how much I believe in it myself. They are two completely unrelated organizations.

Assuming you were to convince anyone that basketball is your religion. Then your religion should be treated the same way as something like Christianity. So if there's a monument to Christianity donated to a park, why should yours be treated differently.

Or lets try it the other way. If my debunking your religion means that Christianity is bunk, than basically there is no reason to differentiate between the two monuments.

On a side note: you're really good at sensationalizing and twisting the meaning of news articles. This hardly qualifies as "free speech killed."

Close. The rule should be Nothing. There is simply not enough room in the state budget and land to put a monument of equal importance of EVERY religion up.

Thusly; no religion on state owned land. Period. End of story.
