Chavez: U.S. will 'bite the dust' if it invades

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez told thousands of visiting students that if U.S. forces were to invade the South American country, they would be soundly defeated.

The U.S. government has strongly denied Chavez's claims that it is considering military action against Cuba's closest ally in the Americas.

But Chavez said late Monday that the U.S. government, which "won't stop caressing the idea of invading Cuba or invading Venezuela," should be warned of the consequences.

"If someday they get the crazy idea of coming to invade us, we'll make them bite the dust defending the freedom of our land," Chavez said to applause.

Chavez is antagonizing us? after we've coordinated a couple of coup attempts and once even propped up a general in his place for a week before the Venezuelan people took to the streets and demanded he return to the office they elected him to??

Some of you guys just don't get it, do you? Venezuela is an oil producing member of Opec, our government doesn't like him because he thinks the profits from oil should be shared among the people of the country, and there are people in our government who think we should invade them so the profits are assured to go to our oil company executives.

And don't even start about Cuba, we are the only country in the world that doesn't allow its citizens to travel there, (yeah we americans sure do live in the land of the free!) there have been high ranking US government officials threatening to invade Cuba ever since Castro came to power.

If we didn't give him reason to spout that rhetoric, I think he'd be less inclined to say such inflamatory things, but the fact is he has every reason to say that sh**.

So your definition of freedom is being allowed to travel to Cuba? America is doing its citizens a favor. What in the hell do you want to travel to Cuba for?

Chavez antagonizes the United States by calling us the "most savage, cruel and murderous empire that has existed in the history of the world." Yet, we are happy to buy oil from them. Fine. My answers in this forum will be the one that guarantees me more oil for the next 20yrs because it’ll make psoper happy. Either that or we find another means of energy.

I find it funny that most people who give us this label around the globe are people that should feel threatened for their wrong doing, or because they’re all under the age of 20 in foreign universities. Australia comes to mind... ask almost anyone out of college if they like the USA and all they have to do is tell you to look around at how similar it is to the “evil empire.” But if you pull aside a group of pimple faced teenagers bumping rage against the machine, they’ll gladly say America is an “evil empire.”

But in all seriousness Chavez is best buds withCastro and power figures in Columbia (shocking). He's pissing off other neighboring countries and rightfully so. The campesinos love him. Why? Because he keeps them all on a leash as he hoards all the money. He redistributes a minuscule amount of wealth as marketing pitch to his competitors. HE keeps the money and power. His cronies receive their portion for cooperation, and in some cases, he throws potential problem makers a bone.

Hand out a very small portion of your oil wealth to the destitute. Money for that pristine new cardboard roof and shiny new wool blanket. Then throw in guaranteed positions of wealth and prosperity for a chosen few and the people will have the constant hope that if they abide by the rules, they too will get a Mercedes and a hot mistress. It's how you keep society happy in a pisshole country governed under extreme socialist concepts. But it's gone beyond that even... it's purely an economic regime these days.

Here's to hoping he meets the same end his idol Bolivar did: resignation and death on his way to exile.

Chavez is a beotch, he was the first foreign leader to meet with Saddam after GW1, he causes problema in neighboring Columbia, and he supports Iran's nuclear program. I too hope he follows the lead of Bolivar.

I for one want to travel to cuba because it sounds amazing. Havanna is supposedly a throwback to the 1950's. A friend of mine and his wife recently traveled there via mexico and said it was absolutely amazing. He said the people are amazing, and the culture is the best.

Psoper: You can travel to cuba: you just can't fly direct from the US. Go to mexico, buy a ticket from there and your in. I hope to do this sometime in the near-ish future.
