Bush: Energy conservation crucial
In last night's State of the Union, President Bush urged Americans to rethink our glutonous approach to oil consumption.
This current White House administration has done the following since coming into office 5 years ago:
- initiated the process of opening up the Arctic Wildlife Preserve to oil companies
- given significant tax breaks to people who purchased SUVs/trucks over a certain tonnage
- dismissed energy conservation as a legitimate way to curb dependence on foreign oil. From sfgate: "In the first year of Bush's presidency, Cheney dismissively observed, 'you cannot conserve your way to energy independence.' "
What do ya'll think changed? Is Bush appealing to alternative energy proponents, try to rally Americans against the bad-guy Middle-Easterners, or other possibilities?

We need to:
-Drill for oil (almost) where ever it is in the US.
-Use Nuclear power.
-Force Solar power usage.
-Up the CAFE requirements.

solar power is an interesting beast. I have heard that it is costly, but you would think that if enough big businesses and state offices bought into it, the costs wuold come down for everyone in the state.
Imagine if they placed solar cells on all of the rooftops throughout major metro areas? Not only would we be able save big cash, but we would also limit the building's direct exposure to the sun, this keeping things cooler, thus needing less energy to cool the building in the warmer months.

...drilling for oil will only give the country false hopes that we can be middle-east-independant. There's simply not enough oil under US soil that has the correct ease of extraction to generate a positive gain. In other words, drilling for oil in the US will waste more energy than can be extracted; unless someone figured out a loophole to the 2nd law of thermodynamics...
I'm ready for more nuclear, solar, and hydro energy though.
