vibration... ABS?
Okay, I just did a 30k over the weekend. As I was driving to work this morning all of a sudden my car/brake started to shake pretty bad. For a moment I thought I had a flat because I wasn't even on brake. I was traveling about 68 miles per hour and slowed down to 60. I was going to pull over to check on my tires, but as I slow down, the vibration seems to be gone. I got off the freeway and was looking for a gas station but no luck. I was on an express way so I was able to travel up to 55 mph, and nothing.
So what the heck? I changed the brake fluid and rotated the tires and balanced them (along with other things). I can't think of a good reason. I wasn't even in a turn (there was a lot on hwy 17). It was after the twisty part of 17 into a straight away.
When I got to work, I check the tires and they were fine and the weights seem to be still there. Help?
Thanks in advance!

okay, I double checked my torque and they are good. Now I have not re-done the balance of the tires yet. But here is another question. If it's really the balance, why would it come and go? I think it only happened 2 or 3 times around 65+. But more than half of the time when I am at 65+, it doesn't do anything!?
Could it still be the balance? I would think if it is, it would do it everytime. The reason I haven't done it is because I got it (balance) for free, so if I go back this time, I would have to pay (yeah, I am a cheap ***). Plus, I got to find the time to do so (work). Anyway.... anymore thoughts?

Try this, swap the front and rear tires on the same side, See if it goes away. Just want to eliminate the possibility of bad belts or something. Normally vibration is more noticable w/ a tire/wheel if it's in the front VS the back. Even better if you can swap a set w/ someone. I was trying to diagnose a shimmy in a neighbor's Legacy and put my second set of RS rims on just to eliminate all the tires as a problem. His still shimmied during breaking. Turned out to be excessive run out in the front rotors for him.

I personally don't think it's a wheel balance issue, I think it's something with the ABS system. I had this happen to me once on the highway when I had to apply the brakes hard and suddenly and my brake pedal started thumping and my steering wheel was shaking real bad. I thought I had a blowout also so I pulled over and saw nothing. I got back in the car and resumed my commute home and it was fine. It hasn't done it again since???

I think that is how it suppose to feel like when ABS kicks in...
BTW, I didn't do anything to the car and it's running fine now. I even drove it to RIM of the World Rally. I was able to bring it up to 100 MPH at one point just to test the tires/wheels (I went back down to 70-75 right after on I-5). And nothing!
Oh well... It's good now, so no complain...
Acutally, could it be mix of brake fluide (old and new)? I mean I suck the container clean, but there were still some (or a lot) in the brake lines. Maybe they were mixing and due to new/old they have different heating/pressure point?
Okay, I am talking out of my **** now.
But still, thanks for all the info!
