what i meant was, is the strut travel a fixed thing. is the strut travel an unchangeable value determined when the car was conceived, or could the travel be easily changed by buying an aftermarket strut?

Oh, yeah. Sorry for misunderstanding. Basically, the change in strut travel should equal the change in spring height mounted on the car. So, for instance the Eibachs, which give 3/4" drop or so, you'd ideally want 3/4" shorter struts.

probably because it isn't a strut-type suspension. You may be thinking of an a-arm type suspension (or something else) that uses upper and lower arms, a coil spring, and a shock.

It all really depends on the design of the suspension. A quick example, if the acuras mount point for the spring is inboard farther than the subaru it will have to have a higher spring rate to hold up the car. The new 350z has a very high spring rate because the spring is so far inboard. I think it was like 600 or something.
