how low is too low?

just put on my new wheels and went from 17" to 18".

guess i need to raise up the car.

tien super sports with no upper pillow mounts.

wheels:
18x8.5 5x100 48offset with 245/40/18 toyo T1R tires

It looks way too low. Any problems with the rear? Did the OE tires rub at that height also?

Take a peek under your car while the it's on the ground (if you can) and look at your lower control arms and I bet they're nowhere level. If you care about performance I'd raise the car until the control arms are at least level and bump the dampening up. It wont look as cool but that's a decision you need to make when owning an Impreza. Look cool or perform like it was meant to.

the stock 17's hardly rubbed. i've already raised up the car 3/4" an inch and i dont rub anymore. feels like a 4x4, but its a really comfortable ride.

It may feel like a 4X4 but it should handle better now. Glad to hear you aren't rubbing anymore.
