Do STI's have STI parts?
I was browsing through a catalog I got with my last order from subaruparts.com and came across some of the STI parts for sale in that catalog. Stainless braided brake and clutch hoses, STI short shift kit, sway bar, aluminum suspension arms, struts, tranny and engine mounts, suspension strut mounts etc, etc, etc.
Well, at the L.A. Autoshow I had a chance to look at the STI for a while. The first thing I noticed was that the "STI steel braided brake hoses" don't come with the STI!! They are the plain rubber coated units. So my question is this....... Does the STI come with all these goodies (aluminum suspension arms, short shifter, upgraded suspension, engine/tranny mounts, etc.) or would I have to buy all of this and put it on the car myself.
The catalog lists all of this as STI parts but do they come on the car from the dealer? I would like to think the additional $8,000 or so over the WRX means those parts are all there.
Thanks for the input!
Mike

It comes with STi Struts, but not STi Springs.
Doesn't come with STi stainless braided brake lines.
It does have aluminum suspension arms.
No STi tranny and engine mounts, suspension strut mounts etc, etc, etc.
Most STi parts are "aftermarket" parts.
But we get a .5L more displacement to play with.

Wow, that was quick!
Sucks to hear that most of those parts don't come on the car from the factory. Kinda like buying an M3 (BMW) and they leave some of the M parts out of it.
These parts all have Subaru and/or STI and/or SPT written on them. I could be wrong but they look like genuine Subaru parts to me.
So the Subaru STI short-throw shifter doesn't come on the STI either, you tell me. How much does it shorten the throw? Do you know? I put a KartBoy short shifter on my girlfriend's WRX... made a big difference!

Thanks for the info on the parts warranty. So the parts either have no warranty or have a warranty for the part alone.
Does installing the part affect the warranty of the whole car? For instance: would installing STI springs void the warranty of the entire suspension system, the entire vehicle, or just on the springs?

Voided Warranties
It depends on what dealership you go to. I've tried to in Hawaii. One dealership the coilovers voided the whole suabru warranty, another one only voided the suspension part of the warranty. Basicaly its who you know.
It isn't legal to void the entire warranty, likely they'll just refuse work on anything your aftermarket part could have reasonably(pretty broad area) caused the failure of.
eg. You put on springs and your engine blows up, they cant deny your warranty for that. If you put on springs then your wheel bearings prematurely go then depending on the dealer they'll probably refuse.

The STi is still a bargain when you add up all of the goodies it has over the WRX. These parts can't be bought new and installed for the $6000 to $8000 premium over the WRX. It's been discussed before so I'll be brief:
6-speed tranny (much more torque capacity than the 5MT)
2.5 liter engine
intercooler water sprayer
front limited slip diff and center driver-adjustable diff
AVCS
only two catalytic converters
the already-named STi suspension pieces
Brembo braking system

Just adding to the list:
HIDS
Forged BBS rims
Good sticky (though loud) tires
Large STi wing (yea I know some feel that's a negative)
I concur, it is a bargain.
The fact that some of the more expensive stuff (brakes, tranny) are already taken care of allows me to funnel that money into improving the suspension. Even with my planned improvements to the suspension I'll be well under $1500.

I agree, the STI is the car for me. I would just like to be able to keep my whole warrantee and still be able to buy hop-up parts, I was hoping that by buying Subaru parts I could do that. Unfortunately even buying Subaru higher performance parts will void your warrantee to some extent, as I now understand it. I still love the car, just wanted to customize to my likes and not get potentially f'd by the dealer down the line.
