coilover choice

so ive been researching coilovers. i dont want to spend a lot cause its not going to be a track car. i dont think ill even take the car to the track once. but im not too fond of the stock suspension and i want to be able to raise the car for snow purposes(back to stock height).
so i've narrowed it down to tien type wagon and tien basic coilovers.
if there are any other coilovers one might recomend within the same price range, please let me know.
but as for the coilovers, dampening isnt a big deal. though spring rate is and im not sure which would be better to go with. i would drive it hard from time to time on the streets, but really, the car wont be modded out too much, maybe a stage 0 chip. i want a fairly comfortable ride as well. i figure both cost about the same, so what are the recomendations from experienced rex owners.

also, whats the deal with the strut mounts, do i need new ones when replacing the suspension? which should i get if i do?

thankx in advance

the basics replaced the wagon, so they are the essentially the same.

I am hearing some good things about the Whiteline Coilovers for situations like this. They aren't as extreme as some of the other. Also, non-inverted, so they are smoother and should last longer. They seem to be a little more civilized for the people that aren't going to be hitting the track or the rally course.

Review I found..

I think SubieGal put some on her street car and had good things to say as well.

i'm on the same boat as you are, i'm considering cusco zero 1. but since i don't need to raise/lower the car often i'm inclined to get AGX shocks with Prodrive springs. decisions decisions....

the snow huh?

i want to take my car out to boston where i currently go to school. and it just dropped 3 feet of snow last night. granted i will probably be keeping the car indoors and wont be driving it much when it does snow.. i dont NEED the car.. i can sitll take public transportation and what not. so i dont NEED to have the car setup for the snow but if duty calls i would like to keep that option open.

i am currently thinking about sti take offs, or the tein basics with group N top hats/cusco in the front. the OEM stuff is always more reliable so dats another plus for the take offs as well as the price. but there are more functions with the teins.

thankx for all the info. also, in reply to the whitelines... they are like 2Gs, for that price i could get some crazy tiens with crazy adjustment or 2 sets of the basic.... so thankx for the info though, cause the inversion is a big deal, but i do like that.

so what is the deal with the hats(strut mounts)?
should i be worried about raising the car for the full winter season and blowing the shocks?

thankx again

I had Flex on my STI for a couple months but took them off since they were just a bit too much for me, I know they are reasonably comfortable compared to other coils but I put 50K a year on my car so I went back to Tein springs on STI struts. Then recently I got a chance to drive Miguels STI with Whiteline Group 4s, whoa!

These handle great with a ride that felt better than a stock STI! I dont know how they do it, they just do. I'll grab a set of these when Im ready to try coils again

so, i was actually researching these, but from what i remember(correct me if im wrong) but the earlier whitelines are notorious for a rough spring rate which is uncomfortable. ture or untrue??

rebbaz- the old Whiteline Coilovers were rebadged DMS 40, thus the harsh ride. The new Group 4 Coilovers are redesigned by Whiteline with lower spring rates (275 versus 500 on some JDM coilovers), and better dampening, thus making an excellent coilover for both street and auto-x/ track use. We've installed 3 sets on STIs here in the Bay Area, all 3 of them love the ride.

I have 2 more sets arriving Tuesday, February 1st. If you are truly interested in these coilovers, feel free to swing by and check them out; we can work something out on the price.

rebbaz- no worries. I'm putting up a brand new set of Group 4 Coilovers w/ some cosmetic damages (scratches on the spring perch and a small dent on one of the base) for $1450 SHIPPED on the Vendor's Forum. Local I-club members will definitely be paying less than that. Let me know if you want to check them out since you are in the market for coilovers.
