Coil overs are not for me. Recommendations please.

Not sure if this is in the right forum.

I have been riding on a set of Megan Racing Street coils for the past six months and have come to the conclusion that I do not need this setup for the type of driving I am/going to be doing. Mainly daily drive my '05 STI and take a lot of trips to tahoe (I know, I know, you all may be wondering, "why did you get an STI in the first place?!?"), well things change and I am not using this car for the reason I originally got it for, but I am opting to just keep it and mod it to fit my driving habits. Plus I really love my car!

First thought and it's probably what you guys will all suggest is, Struts and Springs, but I want to know what brands the community has and what their experience with those brands and models are.

I still have my stock struts and springs so rebuilding them is also an option, and I want something more aggressive than stock, but less stiff than coils.

Any input will definitely be appreciated! TIA

They make plenty of lowering springs that are designed to function with your stock struts. I heard swift is really nice in terms of lowering and they won't blow your struts (at least not as fast a s-techs). There are also great entry level setups like basics that would suit your driving. I've gone through almost 5 coilovers and spring setups and I've just found my combo, struts and springs ftw!

Find some doner struts and get yourself some Koni Sport inserts, Group N tops, and your choice of springs: H&R, Swift, STi Pink, Crucial, any of them will work very well. Preference on ride height and spring rate. Get some beefy sway bars. Hands down the best strut/spring set up available.

Will my stock struts do, is there a way to do this if I just use my stock strut housing?

Thanks for the replies.

If you want to chop your stockers, that's fine. Just don't sell the car with the Konis on there they are waaaaay too nice to let go.

A friend of mine had the same problem as you for his daily driver. He replaced his springs on his Megans with much softer springs, and the ride quality drastically improved. All you need might be some comfortable springs.

That's one way to go about it. Get lower spring rates.

For springs, I like the swift and RCE. We have the RCE on our project STI with stock struts and it does very well on and off track. The gruppe n mounts will help to sturdy things up without adding stiffness. The stock struts are perfectly fine when in good shape. Additionally Konies are nice. Ohlins are super nice

Yeah, coilovers are rough. I thought I had a head light out, took it out and put it back in and sure enough it worked. Apparently my car rides so rough now it'll shake the light from the harness.

Totally depends on the coilovers you buy. They run the full range from race stiff to stock ride

I agree, Ohlins doesn't make much in the way of streetable even with all the settings. I have them as tolerable as they'll go and no dice.

Which ohlins? Their adjustable fixed perch struts aren't too abd. Stiffer, but the damper quality if better so it is more composed
