Did you take the rubber part off the bottom of the perch on the old struts and transfer it to the new ones? (for the rear only)

back seat bottom is fairly easy to take off. two metal u shaped pieces come down on either side, take off the screws that are in them(two total) then kinda lift up and towards the front of the car.

I don't think he changed the struts so that shouldn't be the problem.

I should have read more carefully (so much to read so little time) It's a common problem with swaps and noise.

I'm betting the hat is facing the wrong direction then. That's when mine clunked. Some people have had the large nut on the top work it's way loose also.

I'm having the same issue right now with my replacement coilovers. I was able to fix one side by tightening the nut thats at the top of the strut. Tonight, I'll try the other side.

You should be able to see if that's the issue by jacking up the car, and lifting the wheel. If the wheel moves up and down and the plate on top and the mounting point on the wheel don't move, then its the strut that's going up and down (unless you're strong enough to compress your spring, which wasn't an issue for me).

Tightening the nut on top should hold everything in place. You may want to check the torque specs for that nut though.

You may have to hold a piece under the car to get the nut to tighten down. Mine just kept spinning, without tightening anything.

I never got this to work completely (I did get some improvement). I guess one more night of taking that cap off won't kill me.

This was the best way I found to get the nut tight. Tough to do on the rear though when it's installed on the car:

Some people have mentioned they like to use an impact tool to do this. I'm not sure if it's the same for the Subaru struts, but I've seen someone use one on a strut and it actually unscrewed the internal bottom part of the strut shaft. The shaft just came out in one whole part and the strut no good anymore.

I was able to unload the suspension and turn the hat.

Torque specs are at the link above:

Peaty, I'm having a hell of a time trying to find one of those ratchets. Sears, Snap-On, and eBay have come up empty for me. Know where I can find one, preferably online?

Found it there today, thanks. I overlooked it b/c I was looking for just a ratchet, and also just in Craftsman.
