17x10 wheel fitment and strut questions
I picked up a set of 17x10 +38 rpf1s with 255/40 tires and am having some rubbing on the outside. The sti is new to me and my track car has double wishbone all around. This mc-strut stuff is different enough where I'm not sure the right way to solve it.
What I have:
- 17x10 +38 rpf1s with 255/40/17 tires
- jic coilovers
- rear upper strut bolt is a spc camber bolt
- rear lateral links
- rear is currently at -2.2 degrees
- rear fender lip is ground off and the fender is pulled out some
Problem:
- Rear is rubbing on the outside
The rear tire and wheel is really close to the strut. I guess that's normal on this car? Right now I have the camber bolt setup to give positive camber and have been reducing that (camber is getting more negative) where the wheel is getting pretty close to the strut. That's improved things and I no longer getting rubbing on bumps at highway speeds, but I still get it while cornering hard. There seem to be a lot of different ways (not all equal) to solve this problem:
- Add a spacer and using the camber bolt to add more negative camber. Might need longer lugs, but I plan to do that eventually. I'm hoping this will allow me to tilt the wheel in further (good) even though it's moving out (bad).
- Use the lateral links to add more negative camber. Looks the geometry is such that the wheel/strut clearance doesn't really change when the link length is changed.
- Get some camber plates.
- Raise the car up in the rear.
Any suggestions? Maybe this combo of wheel + tire has shoulders that are too square. On my track car I can pull the springs out and jack up the other side of the car to see if things hit. Not sure if that applies here?

Read this.
Seems like you have some options: Roll/pull fenders with -3.5/4 degrees of camber, or add some flares.

you dont need flares and you dont need lateral links
roll the rears(use this as a guide):How To: Properly Modify 05-07 GD STi Rear Fenders | t3h_Clap's Wheel33tist Blog
and this thread has more info:Enkei RPF01 17x10 fitmet question - Subaru Impreza WRX STI Forums: IWSTI.com (i just googled it btw)
use the camber bolts to give max postive camber, this will give you strut clearance. and get camber plates to adjust to the point where it does not rub. plenty of people run the +38 rpf1s with no issues. Pm if you have any questions.
and people like brfatal are the reason you should go to nasioc and iwsti for wheel fitment info.

As long as you're running a certain wheel setup for a legitimate reason, absolutely. If you're running 18x10 +12 to help you pick up 15 yr old girls (the only people actually impressed by this stuff) from the mall, then I will still help you with wheel fitment, however you likely won't like the answers I have to give you.
I'll give you one guess as to who I am on NASIOC.
