WHEN to check engine oil?

this may sound like a silly question, but ive been having a delimma When to check my oil. im greatly concerned about Correct oil level cause 1) oil is a huge issue to me now since the built motor 2) My oil levels specifically, are significantly spurratic and all over the place depending on Exactly when i check it. also ive been eating up quite a bit of oil fast.. or not??

normally i check it at ie gas stations after i fill up, so about a few minutes, but lately with the new motor ive come to realize, how it changes so much. ie when motor is cold, the level right now exceeds the full dot by around 1-2 inches. when i turn the car on for 10 sec (via turbo timer), waiting 3-4 min, the level is just below the low dot.
ive heard of too many different ways of WHEN to check the oil.

are there any DEATAILED accurate sources out there? is there a specific rule of thumb of the "Correct" oil level via subaru wrx dipstick?

tia for the help and advise.

well first off are you checking it when the car is on or off?

also did you change the to a 2.5 block from a 2.0 when you built your motor? did you change your oilpan and dipstick also?

i think when i do the idle for about 10sec when pretty cold, lots of the thick oil(although 10w30) just gets stuck up in the heads probably, ..cause when i drive it for 10 min and checked it at uckk it was at a little more than full. hm

I check my oil once every week or two when the car is cold (sitting overnight) on a flat surface - however I try not to fill it to the very tip top Full indicator (oil expands when warm and you dont want to overfill - the owners manual says to wait 10-15 minutes after shutting the engine off to check, if I remember correctly). Also - be sure to dip and wipe at least two times to ensure a consistent reading.

Try turning it on and letting it run for a minute... You'll get more correct levels of oil... It has to run thru your turbo and heads first... Then turn it off and check it.

yep, i always check at least 3 times.

i already know to check after the engine is ran a little bit, and waiting a bit, but i was looking for (if there is) a precise standard for when exactly to check.

from all my reliable resources i've accumulated, ive come to a conclusion that im just gonna check it at gas stops (also says to do by owners manual i have) after it has actually been driven for awhile rather than idle for a little bit. i believe this will give you the most accurate reading.. of course waiting a few minutes after engine is off. its been pretty consistent with this method. with a cold motor, then idling just for a little bit like i mentioned above, i think is too thick and gets stuck up in the heads which is why ive been seeing the lack of oil on the stick.

haha this thread seems so silly, but gota make sure the motors lubed, yet no fizzing~

from what i remember.. the dipstick is the same length, and although the shape is different they both hold around 4.8 qts (including oil in filter).

the block should be the same size, the bore and piston size is .5l larger, of course along with a few other differences which shouldn't matter at all.

i have wrx heads w/ no avcs.

hm, i dont know anyone who does that unless they are swapping whole motors instead of just the short block. unless they are using equal headers or they acquired the pan and dip along with the block maybe
