Pearl black is just your plain every day black. Java black is black with gold metallic flakes in it. If you paired up an 03 WRX with MPB and an 04 with JB you would see the difference it makes. I have a weighted opionion, so don't listen to my opinion on it. Cheers and good luck with your suby buying

pearl black would have some sort of flakes in it though not just a plain black, hence the name pearl, but i haven't looked up close to it.

Car Info: MBP is the blackest of blacks. HOLLA BLACK!
isn't the Java Black on the '04 called "java black pearl" ?
and the '02-03 is called "midnight black pearl"

Pearl refers to the flakes you're talking about ...

Java = goldish pearls
Midnight = blueish pearls

What about the new 2005 color? Obsidian Black (pearl?)

I hate the java black color. I'm pretty sure that this color is turning away some customers that wanted a black wrx or sti.

just my opinion.

Obsidian is shiny black, right? So... I'm thinkin' this probably means there is no pearl at all. IMO, a black w/ a dark gray pearl would look sick.

My 98OBS is black w/ red pearl, and any car I get in the future will definitely be black of somekind. But, getting back to the subject, I agree that the Java Black is quite unappealing and would probably keep me from getting a black '04.
...Don't you think they'd realize that generally, the kind of people that prefer black cars don't like shiny, gaudy accents like gold pearl? (I'm not sure about the prevoius generalization, but thats how I feel personally)

Java Black is a great color, IMO

i get comments all the time asking where i got my custom paint job at and telling me how nice it is.

in the sun it almost looks green

the only problem with java black is keeping it clean. black is so hard to keep clean grrrrr......

Well, i just got a spoiler installed by the dealer. They mistakenly put an 04 java black pearl spoiler on my 05 obsidian black pearl wrx. If you look at it really close, the obsidian black pearl has a blue flake, while the java has gold. Obsidian is a lot darker, but i think that java pearl would look better w/ bronze rims than would obsidian. I still am however very very happy w/ my Obsidian black and prefer it to java.
