Trade-in Question: Two car trade-in?
I've managed to find myself with three cars somehow (how does this happen??!?!?!?!), and I'm considering trading two in to make an STi a financial possibility. Having never bought a new car before, I have a couple of questions:
1. Is trading two cars in something that even happens?
2. When cars are traded in, is it usually based on Blue Book Wholesale or does it vary widely based on the dealer?
FYI I'm looking to trade in my:
1994 BMW 530iT - 170K
&
1992 Ford Explorer XLT - 170K
-SS

Dealers will give you almost nothing for those two cars. Your best bet is to sell them locally. Check out a site like www.edmunds.com to get the blue book value of those cars. Given their age and mileage, and then their condition, they might not be worth as much to the dealer as they are to you. That is why I would suggest selling them first, then go to the Subaru dealer knowing your financial status before driving home in that STi Remember, that the dealer doesn't need your cars and often wholesales the traded in vehicles and sends them out to auction.

Car Info: 2004 WRX
for my trade-in (1993 Accord DX with 169K miles and a whole lot of dents and damage on the left side.) most of the dealers were giving me $500.
there was one dealer however who gave me $2000 for my car and i bought from him since he also gave me a good deal on a new WRX $22,000 with options.
that dealership was HUGE. like the same guy named Bowser (like from Super Mario Bros.) owned 7 or 8 dealerships (Buick, Acura, NIssan, Hyundai, Subaru, Chevy, Oldsmobile, and some others i'm forgetting)
so they sell high mileage cars to wholesalers in bulk. and since they sell 15 20 cars at a time, they can sneak in my low value car into the deal with the wholesaler and give me a decent trade-in on it.
and ofcourse i had the $500 email from subaru so that helped too.

I traded in two cars at the same time to get my my WRX and another SUV, like it was said before you will get next to nothing for those cars. New cars have such great incentives right now that used car sales are slow, so it brings down the value of a car, blue book is a good guide but check with dealers in your area to get the actual market value of the car (it will be a lot lower than blue book). Also remember to not just take what ever the dealer ship is giving you, some times you can get more money for your car at other dealerships. For example I traded in a 2002 Eddie Bauer explorer, the subaru dealership would give me 19k for it, I called around to some ford dealerships and found one that would give me 21.5K for it. I went back to the subaru dealership gave them the name of the Ford dealership the quote and the name of the used sales manager. The suabru dealership took my truck in as a trade at 21.5k because they basically just turn around and sell it to the Ford dealership. So ask around go to different dealerships and see what they will give you in trade in valeu and out right sale. My dad sold cars for a few years =) Good luck hope you get the STI

I traded in my 2001 Mazda Protege MP3 and 2003 Mazda Protege 5. It actualy went rather well and with no problems. the dealer didn't even flinch at it.
2. Yep, blue book. They gave me all but exactly what the kelly blue book was on them.

tax break
i sold an sti to a customer who traded in a maxima(excellent con.) and gave him between whsl/retail book. and below whsl on his SLED(82 toy). one benefit of trading in is that if you paid the registration fees(recently) you might get a tax discount on your new car purchase(depends on state) at least here in da 5-0 state you will.
