Is the STI really worth the extra money?

As of now I have about $25,000 to spend on a new car. My top choice as of now is a WRX. I havnt had a test drive yet, but I am going to Saturday. My original plan was to buy a used one for $15-18k (I've been researching, seems possible with no problem) then use the rest of the money to mod it some. Or should I spend it all on a STI? I could probably scrounge up a few more thousand if I needed for the STI. I really want a car that performs decent all around. It doesnt have to be GREAT at anything, as long as it's good at everything. I want it to be abl eto hold it's own on every aspect of a cars performance. With that being said, would I be better off buying the used WRX and modding it right away, or a STI and just very slowly modding it?

ty ty!

wrx msrp 25grand sti msrp 31grand

pound for pound the 6grand increase is def. worth it. keep in mind u can mod wrx easily in terms of horsepower to match the sti somewhat...but the dccd is a nearly impossible thing to reproduce in a wrx unless u import one from another country. keep in mind also that the sti is not a quiet car in terms of 'comfort" . u can get a wrx and still have that hp along with the comfort of a quiet ride when u want it.

it would cost you more than $6000 to bring the wrx to the sti spec. i guess it depends on what you think you can afford. insurance and gas alone will run you a few hundreds per month. i am happy with my wrx, but still drool every time i see an sti

I'd go with an STi. The suspension is better from the start, 6 speed, dccd, bigger engine. It's an awesome car. The only thing I dislike about the STi is the interior color scheme. I dislike the blue berry accents every where..but to stomp *** it'd be worth it.

Also, the car is comfy. It's got a nice tight feel to it - you feel the road, and that's good. Me likey.

Go w/ an STI. Think of it as a WRX w/ all the mods you would have done to it anyways (bigger turbo, intercooler, Brembo brakes, BBS wheels, STi suspension, active differentials, etc). The Stage 2 Kit from Vishnu for the WRX (as featured in the SportsCarCompact comparison between modded WRXs vs. STI) already cost over $4K. The only mod the STI needs right of the bat are upgraded rear swaybar and endlinks (helps w/ the handling). Just my $.02 in

I would go with the STi unless you plan to heavily mod the car. My thoughts are why pay the extra 6k if your going to take most of the stuff the STi comes with off (turbo, exhaust, rims, body kit, coilovers, front mount ic...ect).

I have owned both WRX and STi. GET THE STi! It is worth the money. I love this car. Only downside is being protective of the blue seats.

Thanks everyone!

I am still pretty 50/50. I do plan on heavily modding it and from what I have seen there arent any piggy backs or ECU upgrades for the STI as of yet. So, I'm just wondering how long it will be before those come out. I have a problem where I get anxious wanting to mod and it's hard for me NOT to, especially when I have the money hehe.

Alright chris...I hope this helps you. I was in the same predicament a while ago. i got a wrx because i didnt think i was ready for the sti. But now having the rex i know in time i would have been. Go with the sti you wont be disappointed. Learn the car before you mod it. Push it to its limits and then by the time you have done that you will be ready for modding and modding will be ready for you(most forms of engine management will be out). If you do this im sure you will be in great shape and wont regret it. Hope this helps..If you ahve the money get the sti

Actually, Vishnu has a Stage 1 kit (Xede and exhaust system) for the STI out right now.

Cool, thanks for the heads up. I don't know why I was thinking there were no ECU upgrades.

Thanks, Joel. After thinking ALL day on it I am learning alot more towards the STI. I am going to drive my friends WRX Saturday to see what I think of it. It has minor bolt ons, and is asking $17,000. But I still think I will go for a STI. We will see after this weekend

Thanks everyone for their input! It's all very much appreciated.
