Are you sure it's the compressor? It could also be the cooling fan up in front which kicks on when the compressor kicks on (electric powered fans are usually on bushings - when they wear too much, the fan basically shakes itself to pieces - I haven't looked at the one in the WRX (mine is quiet), but this was an issue in a previous car (wife's 91 Jetta)

Could be the fan...

Had the car at the dealer with the SOA Area rep and even though the service manager heard the noise, I now have my 7th or 8th notation of can't duplicate the complaint. I'm going to AAMCO to have the Transmission run since SOA won't admit I have a transmission problem either, so I guess I could ask them when I'm there.
