But they still shift like standard "slushbox" automatics. I don't know what the hype is about with those...

Yeah I hope a real sequential manual come out soon, if its cost effective. There will be a shiftable automatic next year (at least in the Legacys), which is a good step, but still shifts like an automatic

No, its got a clutch and flywheel, but no clutch pedal (although they may include one for emergency use, I dunno).

In theory, when you pull the shift ****/paddle/whatever, hydraulic acuators will release the clutch, shift and engage the clutch in a fraction of a second. This is at least what happens in the WR Cars, so I assume the same principal applies, although it may be a simpler implementation.

You do realize that specialized transmission costs a whole LOT of $$$

Since suby is getting a name as an economy priced vehicle that kicks extreme but its hard to imagine that the added cost of this tranmission will become standard on it. Unless of course the transmission decides to suddenly drop down in price which i can't ever imagine since it would be a specially designed one becuase the suby is AWD and needs that Center Dif. and axel to power the front wheels

nKoan has it right, SMG's are full on manual tranny's with hydraulicly controlled clutch and shift levers. Sometimes they can shift faster than a human driver, but most affordable cars that have them (Toyota, non-M series BMW's) are not that quick, and your better off getting a traditional gearbox. "Sport-tronic", "Tip-tronic", "Manu-matic". These are all regular automatic tranny's with computer controlled shift valves. It allows the driver to select gears and get a more "sporty" feel. In reality it's just a sales gimmick. The car still shifts as slow as a regular automatic set in "D".
