Question on 2.5L engine
I'm looking into buying an Impreza in the near future.
Can anyone tell me if the 2.5 RS engine is similar to the 2.5 STI engine? (of course without the Turbo?)
Could you easily add an aftermarket Turbo and a FMIC to the RS?
The reason I ask is that I'm looking into getting a 04-05 WRX but my wife doesn't like the hoodscoop and doesn't want to pay 20-24k on a small sedan that is not very practical. (not to mention the mods I'd want to put into it.) I was wondering if you could get the RS for less and slowly mod the car to be as fast or faster than a WRX. (Of course I would only want to spend around 5k on engine mods.)
Does the 2.5 liter engine have more low end torque than the 2.0 turbo (before the turbo spools up)?

Yes the RS can be upgraded but you would be better off just getting the wrx if thats what you want...a turbo kit for the RS costs 3-4k and you will decrease the life of the engine much faster..and not dealer waren., I'd just go for a wrx wagon.. still have the turbo fun and you can do little upgrades to give it more power.
The RS does have a nice bit of low end torque especially compared to the WRX when its off boost. I just traded my 2000 RS for a WRX. I know. But really, how can anyone say any Subaru isn't practical.. ? Maybe the STi since its very sport tuned. As Murf said, you can get lots of juice out of the RS, but at the severe cost of reliability. It would cost a lot of money to get the RS to come even close to stock WRX specs, where as you can get semi-close to stock STi performance out of a WRX with not too much money and way better reliability.
I'm sorry, but I'm still dumbfounded that she said it wasn't practical..
That being said, the RS is still a fun car to drive. The 2.5L is quite easy to drive and still has a fair amount of kick to it. Just get her to drive both and see which one she likes better. Good luck man.. keep pushing for that WRX. Its worth it..

It's not that she thinks the RS IS practical, but it cost less money so it can be more easily justified. The biggest problem is the back seats don't fold down. I haven't considered the wagon till recently. I used to think it was ugly until I saw a new black one on the lot. It was awesome looking! (Maybe I'm just getting used to it.)

Hold out for the Legacy Outback GT...the new one with the 2.5L turbo.
More practical because its bigger.
If they would've came out with this car when I bought my WRX wagon, I might have gone for it instead.
Either that or just wear her down with constant talk of WRX...my wife finally caved just to shut me up...wOOt!

You could do what I did. Tell the wife your just going for a test drive and buy the WRX. Easier to beg for forgiveness than ask for permission.

It is not worth your time, effort and money trying to roll your own WRX just because your wife doesn't like the way the hood scoop looks.
I know what you're going through. My wife and I debated back and forth for a long time and I almost settled for a V6 Accord...lemme tell ya...nice car but fun was engineered out completely(automatic sedan i'm referring to).
If you're gonna lay down that much cash, better get what you want and take your lumps.
You WILL be happier in the end run. I am.
If you're wife can't get over it, then the car you select is the least of your worries.

Unlike what everyone else is saying, the RS is the more practical. If you do some research with some dealerships you can find an RS nicely equiped for $17,000. Right now is a good time to pick up an 04 that may have been pushed away for the new 05s. I got mine for $17,100 brand new 02 last march. It had the foglights, armrest extension, mudflaps, wheel locks, and upgraded security system. MSRP was 22,000 i think.
As for mods, an RS has more torque than the WRX it will take off quicker because of the dissplacement. Until the turbo kicks in for the WRX. So even a basic turbo will make the RS a lot faster because of the launch. If you do deciede to turbo, the RS 2.5 is almost the same as the STI as in you can swap most of the parts like the heads, so before you turbo you can pick up a STI block and transfer all of your parts to it to bulletproof it. Then you can get a cheap turbo kit for $2000.
You don't even need to turbo an RS to make it faster the WRX either. So if you don't want to lose any reliability there are tons of other mods to do also. Check out CobbTuning.com They have a stage 3 power pack that will make the RS 200 BHP WITHOUT A TURBO. Oh, I forgot to mention, this forum is mostly WRX and STi users so naturally you that is what they will want you to buy. Go over to RS25.com and you can get some more opinions on RS's

either way, you'll probably end up trying to make it go faster
I just have stated that more clearly, I was saying to buy a WRX and have a RS hood and a FMIC installed (cause of the no scoop). Then taking the WRX logos off and replacing them with RS logos. (Almost like a WRX sleeper)
