Please advise: replacing timing belt

I bought a used 1996 Impreza a couple of months ago. It's got 126,000 miles on it. I don't know for sure when the timing belt was replaced, so I think I'm going to do it now.

Two questions:

1) I've had a few things done with a local mechanic here in Brooklyn (struts, oil change, diagnostic, front axle) and I like him. He seems like a straight shooter and he hasn't tried to overcharge me. He doesn't specialize in Subarus. Do you think it's okay to change my timing belt (and everything else around it) with him or should I take it to a Subaru specialist. I'm hoping y'all will say he's fine, because his location is very convenient to me and his prices seem fair.

2) He says he can do the belt, seals, water pump, thermo, etc. for about $600 with aftermarket parts. Is it okay to use all aftermarket parts? Or should I request that he only use OEM parts? Does it matter?

Thanks, I haven't owned a car in more than 10 years, so this is unfamiliar territory to me. This board is a great resource!

If you are uncertain and can afford to do the timing belt now, then that is definately a good idea. (Better safe than sorry)

The Boxer's timing belt is pretty long....maybe close to three times the length of most cars (the actual belt that is)

I'd ask him if he's had experience with Subaru's (or Flat 4 or 6) engines before.

Changing a timing belt is pretty standard work (there's just more to it in a Subaru's engine)

Also if you know anyone else that has a Subaru around you see if any of them have used this mechanic before. If you are even the slightest ill at ease I'd say look around a bit more.
