Need help/info on hauling a subaru
alright, heres the car, 1997 impreza OBS, awd, 5spd, yada yada you all know... anyway, this is my last resort because i am fresh out of ideas, and i dont know enough about the car to make any more definitive ones...
heres the situation, originally i was supposed to haul it on a flatbed (awd, flatbed, good, dolly, bad), but the only one i can rent within any reasonable distance to me is WAAAAAY to big for the truck i own, and every other option for getting a bigger truck has fallen through, so a flat bed is almost out of the question at this point
... now another option that i'm thinking is just not going to work, is getting a dolly, pulling the rear driveshaft, and transporting it this way, but after reading up a little bit it appears that option wont work very well either, as it sounds like i'd be spewing tranny fluid all over the place on the trip back, not a good thing...
anyway, i've got access to a dakota 4x4 with a class 3 hitch, there aren't any flatbed trailers around that my truck will pull, and i can't get a bigger truck, does anyone have any other options that they can think of that i might be able to implement? ANY HELP AT ALL IS GREATLY APPRECIATED, i just want to go pick up my car already
...
oh and driving it back is a no go as well because the state of massachussetts is rediculously stupid, dont even ask, they are so beyond stupid it isn't even funny...

tow it with all 4 wheels on the ground. Like you see RVs doing all the time pulling their car behind them without a trailer. It just requires some mounting hardware that then hooks int the hitch
Check your user manual, but I believe with a manual transmission it is okay to tow with all four wheels on the ground and the transmission in neutral.
Its not optimal, but if you have no other options, it might be worth looking in to.
EDIT: From subaru's website directly http://www.subaru.com/common/faq/index.jsp#3

I`m not sure if this is possible, but can`t you get a dolly on both ends? one with a hitch and one without?
I know the tow trucks around here can do it.. I watched one get hauled a week or so ago.. It was parked front end in the spot opposite me, so they lifted the back with the trucks hydraulics, and stuck a dolly under the front..

... i also thought about towing it like that with a tow bar, but i couldn't find anyone in my area that rented one of those either, i couldn't even find one for sale except for online and i needed it tonite, i figured if all 4 wheels were on the ground it would be alright, but its good to know 100% for sure that it can be towed that way... and i would have loved to look in the owners manual, but its in massachussets and i'm in michigan
...thanks for all the replys, but i've got it handled now, i was in a quick rush to try and figure something out so i was looking for any help, but it looks like i'll just have to wait until next weekend (which i didn't want to do because its already been like a month + some since i "bought" the car on ebay, and i'm sure the seller is getting a little anxious, even though he says otherwise), i can get a smaller trailer that i'll pull next weekend, but it'll cost me a little more than the one i was gonna get before, so basically smaller worse trailer=more money, bigger better trailer with tilt option=less money, makes no sense to me but whatever, i just need to get this car in my possession and it needs to happen soon...
thanks again for the replys, i really appreciate all the help/ideas, but it looks like i'm gonna have to delay this another weekend due to me waiting til the last minute to pick up the trailer, they told me it would work with my truck over the phone, but at the place it was quite apparent that it was most definitly NOT going to work...
later,
James
