Need advice on a high mileage 00 2.5 RS
Hello,
I'm going to take a look at a used 2000 Impreza 2.5 RS and just wanted some advice. Some specs:
Silver
150,XXX miles
5-speed
Price: $4000
Do you guys think that this mileage is way too high? I did a search and most people say that 100K is just break-in for Subarus. What maintenence will have to be done on it when/if I really purchase it? What should I look for when going over the car? Is there much life left in this engine? Also, is this a good deal?
I'd really appreciate some Subaru guru advice!!
Thanks in advance,
Chris

Besides all of the usual tuneup/ timing belt/ maintenance record info, don't forget to check all of the axle cv boots (8), because these fail over time and mileage as well. Also, check for oil leaks, even compression if you have the time, etc. Make sure it passes the smog test with flying colors.
That price sounds good to me, but I don't know what the market rate is for one of those.
If the guy was **** and changed the oil every 3k miles, had subaru do all of the maintenance, and kept the car clean enough to eat off of, I wouldn't worry about much. Just buy it.

When you're test driving it, keep an eye on the temperature gauge. Over time, the EJ25 Motors don't have the strongest head gasket, and at 150k miles, I'd expect to have to change it, if it hasn't already been done.
a possibly good deal though.....
kidatari is right on about the head gasket. The price is just a little bit lower than I honestly expected it to be... almost as if he took it into a dealer to trade it in, they told him it needed a head job, and offered him $2,500, and he figured, hey, I can sell it quick for 4K.
Of course, it's also possible that it's totally fine, and he was offered like 3K for trade, and figured he could make a quick G by selling private party, but didn't want to price it high, because he wanted to sell fast.
Anyway, check it carefully, but it could be a great deal, espeically if he's maintained it well!
