My Poor Car
Well, I just got my car back from getting checked on and come to find out there is ALOT wrong with it. Major stuff just to keep it running is $950.00!!!!! :O
I have no idea where I am going to get the money to fix this scooby. Anyone know if replacing the rear main seal or cam shaft seals is hard to do, or how much time is involved. BTW, I have a 96 Impreza 2.2L.
Life is short, and this sucks

well, if that quote is from a subie dealership you can probably do a lot better at a different shop that is familiar with subie's
i got quoted $680 for 6 hrs of work, just work no parts!!!!
the only reason i get any work done at subaru is for warranty reasons, but as soon as my warranty is up im never going there again.
good luck on getting your car fixed

Honestly; If I were you -- I'd grab a repair manual, gasket kit, torque wrench and a compression tester.
I would check the compression on each cylinder first to be sure its all good..... then if it is... pull the motor and take it apart.. replacing every gasket. Hell... while you are at it.. get a re-ring kit too.
I could source that stuff for ~410... probably cheaper if I looked harder. It takes ~ 1.5 hrs to pull the motor (personal first time experience). Another 2-5 to take it all apart and label everything... my first time was ~3.5. Another 3 to put it all back together and torque it all to spec. Then throw the motor in.. for sh*ts and giggles do a quick tune up... fuel filter, spark plugs (& other ignition components), all fluids changed and a timing belt.
Seriously everything except the timing belt.. it should cost you under 600.. if you are good at sourcing parts..... 750 MAX. This wouldbe a more thorough fix than I bet subaru is going to give for the price. Plus you know it is done right due to the fact that you took care of it yourself and followed step by step instructions.
Everything slips together easily with time and patience.
Regards,
Gered

That's a hell of a lot of work to save $200.
That is actually a very reasonable price. I had the cam gasket, CV boots and plugs done on my '98 Legacy wagon and it was about $1200; worth every penny, as they did an amazing job (even steam-cleaned the engine compartment and underbody).

Wow, thanks for all the replies guys. I can't do it myself for a few reasons, one being my limited knowledge of cars, I'm no mechanic even though most of the times and I can figures things out on my own; two is that I don't have the time to put into it and I need transportation. I think I am just gonna take it to another well known mechanic after I get some money together. BTW, anyone know what a replacement motor would be??? New or used?

Long block or short block? Seriously though.. to save 200$ is a good thing.. I could do this whole thing in a day.. starting at 9.. ending at 9.. taking my time and with bfast, lunch and dinner.
Its really easy.. but its understandable.. its not like.. a real good thing to do a motor rebuild as your first big shade-of-the-tree mechanic sorta deal.

Gered, I don't know whether to go long or short block honestly. Too bad you aren't close enough for me to have you do it for me
JK. I know I don't have all the tools and/or knowledge to do the job is my only worry. But this won't happen for another few weeks at best because I gotta scrub up some money. So, for now I just gotta keep dumping oil in 'er like there's no tomorrow!

Well here is the thing.. if and when you do the motor exhange.. do you want to go performance-minded, or reliability+++?
With a short block.. you COULD, technically get a 2.2 Turbo shortblock, throw on a set of 2.5 liter sohc heads and do a happy dance :-P..
It all depends on what you use the car for .. give me some examples of what you do.. with the car.. then we could go from there.. hell you could source just a plain ol 2.2 shortblock.. then slap your heads on and all accessories.. for ~ the price of what they are charging you.
And yes.. too bad I'm not closer.. because I would help you def... gotta help out da family of boobaru's...

I just want more getup. I would rather do a swap like you are talking about then just pay this much to keep it running. I do alot of driving on this car and I push it pretty hard so if I'm gonna spend money, I want it to lean towards the performance side. I don't wanna be a bother but what would I do if I wanted more juice out of it for roughly the same cost. My dads a mechanic, or used to be, so he could help me out if I got stuck and would love the father son time

Find out how good your bottom end is first.. I would honestly just do what I said int he first place and do a compression test to see if the motor is still good.
Then figure out where you wanna go from there.
You can get a 2.2 turbo shortblock and 2.5 sohc heads for ~1250.. if you shop around most likely less.
The car would be pretty sick then.. throw on a stock wrx turbo and intercooler.. I could set you up with that for say.. 100 bucks... + shipping.. and you woul dhave a pretty quick little ride..

So after the 2.2T shortblock and 2.5 heads, would I need to change the ECU too? You know of anyone with these parts for cheap? Or a distributor for them? $100 for the turbo and intercooler would be a steal and I would definately do it. I just gotta wait a week or so to see if this loan will go through to pay for this stuff.

Can anyone help me out with these parts? Correct me if I'm wrong, but I will need:
1) 2.2T shortblock from a 91-94 legacy??
2) 2.5L heads from a ????
3) ECU reflash
The turbo and intercooler I can do later, I just gotta get this thing up and running.
Thanks,
Cody

Do some research.. start checkin bone yards and even ask some local dealers if you can be sourced a dead 2.2t block as well as heads.. Lots of them are more than willing to point you in the right direction. Thats how I source.
