maintenance questions...

1) Does anyone know the rear diff fluid change interval? Can this be done by the "do-it your selfer" or is it recommended to take to a shop?
2) My stock '02 WRX has some starting issues. It cranks over unusually long before firing up, and when it does it maintaines an erratic idle for approximately 10 seconds before settling down. Its worse when cold, but also does it when the engine is luke-warm. I think its a fuel issue, but not sure.

Yes, I don't see any reason why you cannot DIY. Your idle air probably has some kind of a problem or you probably just need a plain and simple tune up.

1. you can do it yourself. all you need is a 1/2drive ratchet and fluid. a breaker bar might be needed depending on how tight your drain and fill plugs are. the hardest part is the fluid. i dont think the dealer sells the fluid in quarts, or in anything smaller then a 5 gal drum. the service interval is normally done at the 30k, 60k, interval. im sure if you give the dealer 30 bucks or something they should do it for you.
2. that sounds normal to me. Subaru's tend to have a long crank.

I heard the rear differential isn't too picky about which oils as long as its 75w90 and synthetic. I just changed to uncle scotty's cocktail and forgot to change my rear diff. I'm probably going to be doing it this week. Can anyone confirm?

To the op, like the post above, its very easy to change the transmission oil. The only thing I hated about doing it was going SLOWWWLY so that I don't overfill.

Heres a DIY on rear diff oil change.
