Just had front differential fluid changed today

Car Info: 1997 Subaru Legacy Outback
Just had front differential fluid changed today
They found metal shavings in the fluid. 3rd gear is notchy, like the very beginning of the syncro wearng out. I had Subaru put in Mobile 1 synthetic gear oil 75w-90 in hope that it'll help.
How much does a used tranny go for these days? I have a 97 Legacy Outback, think a RS tranny would fit and perform well? Just planning for the long term. I'm married to the car for life pretty much.
