But as long as you don't beat the crap out of them (5k clutch drops, etc.) they will last a long time. It all depends on how you treat them. If you abuse it, it will break.

Since this is such a big issue with the WRX's, are there aftermarket trannys that are built right? How about putting in a 6MT STI transmission in there, will it mate right up? I can't imagine it would be that much more than a 5mt. Maybe 500-1000 more, but the peace of mind would be worth it? I'm assuming STI transmissions are much better?
If either of the options listed above has a "yes" answer, is this an option that can only be undertaken if SOA denies a warranty claim on a transmission? Or can you take the warranty $ for the part/labor and get your own aftermarket transmission? or pay a little extra to have them put in a STI 6MT instead?

Tranny's aren't an issue if you have an auto, or if you don't beat the living heck out of your 5 speed. I don't drive like a grandma, but I don't bang the gears. With AWD, your neutral drop won't result in tire-spin, but in shock to your drivetrain (and "impressive" launches, to say the least!)
I'm in the process of replacing my 5-MT with a used STi 6-MT. The tranny and install kit ran me about $4200 through Gruppe-S.
The total for my iprovements: STi 6-MT, Vishnu Up-Pipe, Vishnu IC Hose kit, ACT HD Street Clutch, and 14.3lb flywheel I'm paying around $6200
All in US $
My 5-MT broke without my abusing it or mod'ing my car, but I can't say what the previous owners did to it.

I heard that if youused the STi 6 speed you pretty much needed to replace the rest of the drivetrain, I saw this in an issue of sport comact when they showed how to swap a WRX engine into an Impreza. Is this true?

I recently rolled the dice on a used wrx with a bov and boost controler. it had a boost leak the same day i bought it and they fixed that. then the next month or so my cv boot went and it was back to the dealer. after that i had it for about a month and i thought the worst was behind me but i was wrong. i do drive spiritedly but dont abuse it. anyway i pulled out and shifted into second and pop something broke. i am no expert but im pretty sure my second snapped or broke. i have the extended warranty with the car as is including the boost controler, intake ,and bov. it was obviosly abused before i got it and they no it. i only had the car for a few mos. it is now in the shop and i am scared they will deny it saying i abused it. any imput on what i should do if they deny me or what i should do to prove my innocence
