faulty cruise control: 90 legacy AWD wagon 5spd

Hey suby experts, the light on the dash goes on when you press it and you hear that click sound telling you its functioning. But when I'm driving and go to engage the lever on the steering wheel, it won't set the cruise no matter what.

I've replaced the lever on the steering wheel and put in a new relay switch (the red one behind the fuse box) all to no avail. I'm totally stumped. Can anyone help??

Check your brake lights. If one of your brake lights is burned out, the cruise control won't work. Something I've heard, never experienced, but couldn't hurt to check.

all lights were working. thanks very much for your reply though!

I thought the recall had the cruise sticking open; not stopped working;)

Got my oil change at the dealer, and they said there's a recall on the cruise control cable clip.........whatever that is! But, they fixed it........just an FYI...

The first thing to check if the cruise control stops working on a 5 speed is the clutch switch stopper. It typically breaks off and leaves a hole that the clutch switch button sticks through(the stopper should push the clutch switch button in when the clutch pedal is at the top of its travel). This is a 2 or 3 dollar part that is easy to install. Just get under the dash and push down on the clutch pedal, then pop the new stopper into the hole. The cruise control will not operate if the clutch switch is not depressed(thus it disengages the cruise control when the clutch pedal is operated).
Hope this works for you-

lol.. oh yeah- the clutch switch stopper in a '90 is almost a guarantee to fail. had a customer 2 months ago with the same problem.

thanks bruce and everyone. it was in fact the clutch pedal and now it works like a dream! if i can ever afford a newer suby, i will buy it from your place and tell them it was because of you.

"It's all because of you"

Anywayz, Mind telling me what offset for the wagon 2002 can I go bigger tires or wider tires?

Subaru of SC 04-12-2004 02:57 PM

The best upgrade I've used for a WRX wagon is the Prodrive
wheels(p1 or p7), rim size 17"x 7",53mm offset, 215/45/17 tire size (225 tire width or smaller offset will rub inside the fenders).

BASTOS 04-12-2004 03:45 PM

what's the diff between 215 and 225? Just want wider tires!

I am currently using ADR Sokudo rims 225x45x17....Fender's shaved off! dunno wat offset it is....

I'm thinking of purchasing SDR's 17x7.5 on a budget...... So, i can put on my Brembo Brakes on......

Subaru of SC 04-12-2004 05:05 PM

The difference is 10mm in tire width. As long as the tires don't rub,you are OK. There is no reason to use 7.5" wide rims-they are just heavier than the 7" and unnecessary for the tires you are running. The big brakes should work fine as long as you use the 17" diameter wheels.

You're awesome, Thank you....
