Considering an '04 that's been sitting on the lot for a year
Hey there,
Please excuse the newbie question. I just tried a brand new ’04 WRX (it’s been sitting on the dealer lot for a year now). It’s very basic (short shifter and alarm) but I really do like it. Two questions:
1) Aside from the financing and depreciation implications, am I giving anything up by buying an ’04 a year later? Any big risks with buying a car that’s been sitting on the lot for a year?
2) What are my risks with a dealer installed moonroof?
I’d appreciate any feedback you guys could give me.

no major differences 04 to 05, but keep in mind that that car will be 2 years old less than a month after you drive it off the showroom. Unless they're willing to part with it for less than 20K, which is very unlikely, it's not worth it. You can get a brand new 05 for 21 and change.

Having that car sit on the lot for so long has cost the dealer a lot of money. I agree, unless they decide to take the loss and sell it to you at a big discount, I'd forget it. The dealership is looking for a sucker who will take a deal for a little off of MSRP (which you can do on any new Subie) an go home thinking he's won. I don't like moonroofs as a rule, they are often troublemakers, especially in norcal where winters can bring some pretty substantial rain.
I would also look at the miles. Chances are there is a reson the car has been there that long. Correct me if I'm wrong, but "new" just means it has never had an owner. That doesn't mean they didn't use it for test drives.
test drive miles
1000 test drive miles one way or another won't really have any bearing on the car's value, although test drive miles tend to be hard miles, and car's don't get lots of attention sitting on a lot (brake rotor rust, tire spots, etc).
All those things aside, your biggest issue really is the fact that you're looking at paying a new car price for a car that as soon as you drive it off the lot, is going to be considered a 2 year old used car.
