buy wrx or sti
I have been a real fan of subarus for some time, i have been in both wrx's and sti's and i can't decide if its worth paying for the sti and adding mods to it or pay less and possibly have more money to add mods to the wrx. Any ideas on what i should do ? I am def looking for something that runs, i want it to eventually push into the 11's so any help would be great..
How much money do you have? When do you want to be in the 11's? If you don't care about the initial price, get the sti. I wish i would have. In fact i may still. I may keep my 04' wrx and wait and buy a slightly used sti. They are already selling them. Try to find a used one. I think that there might even be 1 or 2 on here for sale. Get the sti. You won't be sorry.
Now that i thin about it. For mod purposes if you have lots of cash you could get a wrx into the 11's right now. I have heard that the sti mods are coming but rather slowly due to the fact that it's a new motor. I am sure some sti guys on here will comment on that. I just think for the cash you will spend you'll probably to dump 20,000 into a wrx to be as good of a car as the sti even stock. Just my 2cents. Godd luck.

This is a little off topic but...
I believe the STI has a lower redline than the WRX. It uses a longer stroke crank than the EJ20 engine. That would lead me to believe that, unless the rod/main journal diameters have been increased or they are using a better quality steel, the STI crankshaft is inherently weaker than the WRX crankshaft. That might limit the ultimate power you can safely make with the STI engine.
This is just a theory. I'm interested in hearing what others think or know.

OK, first off people have said a lot about the STi shortblock, but there has never been one bad remark about the crank. It's forged and it's damn nice. Second, for the purchase price of the STi (28,900) you get a lot more. I have an '02 wrx and will be getting rid of it next week for an STi with 3000 miles on it. I've had fun in my wrx, but I'd like to step it up a notch. Nothing against the wrx, which is a fine, fine car. But the amount of mods needed compared to the amount of mods needs on an STi makes the decision that much easier for me. Just the Transmission is worth it alone to me. Not to mention countless other things, brakes, a-arms, drivetrain, AVCS, wheels, tires, I/C spray, displacement, etc. It's just a better car out of the box. Not to say that you can't make a WRX as good or better, it will just cost you more than they entry price of an STi. Hence my decision to "move up"

Where I live its hard to find an STI for under 30,000. I bought a WRX for 27,000 with every option available. If I would have gone with the STI it would have been 35,000 with the same options. Its all in what you want. I don't think you will be dissapointed either way you go. And as fat as insurance goes my agent said that both cars are considered performance cars as opposed to sports cars so they have the same surcharges on them. the only diference in cost is from the cost of the vecicles.

Joel,
I'm not "badmouthing" the STI and I'm not saying the WRX is a better car than the STI. I'm only questioning whether or not the STI engine has the potential to safely make alot more hp. Remember that this is a US market engine that was put together fairly quickly after the decision was made to bring the STI over here and that the JM STI engine was not as suitable due to it needing high octane fuel to make the power levels that were wanted.
What is the redline on the STI? I think it's less than the WRX. That sends a signal to me.
Forged or not, if the crank does not hac=ve larger journals, it is weaker than the 2.0 crank and therefore might limit the hp and certainly the rpm on this engine. If the crank is a completely new one, and not a carryover from the standard 2.5 crank, then that has probably been addressed.

there is no replacement for displacement the sti is waaaaay better all around. the tranny and brakes are worth it alone.

Tough to say. If you want an 11 sec daily driver then you want the STi's tranny. I haven't been keeping up with the latest Engine Management options for the STi so you'd want to research that.
I had a similar decision to make 9 months ago and went with a WRX. Another option I considered was picking up a used RS and doing a JDM STi motor/tranny swap.

I'd take a WRX and modify it with the extra money. That's just me though. I realize that the STi is one hell of a car (duh), but it's quite costly especially the price tag and the aftermarket parts. Therefore, you could possibly modify more with the WRX with the money.
If you're loaded and don't care, then yea.. STi would do the trick. Otherwise if you're more economical, the WRX.

Buy a new WRX and then have a ****ty tranny, then tell me what's worth the money. I have a WRX and will be getting rid of it, thankfully my tranny is in good shape but I think that's because I baby it and use amsoil plus I only have 260whp. But at 32,000 miles I can just feel the sloppy-ness and 1st gear is almost impossible to downshift into without double clutching. The fact remains that a WRX with a 6MT swap will cost more than an STi. And FWIW, the redline is not lower on an STi.

p.s. I thank my wrx for all it's fun, but much like a new Dr. I'm trading in for a better model.
