Auto suby wrx
auto vs manual
if you hope to ever re-sell the car. Don't even consider an automatic WRX. This makes the car virtually sale proof unless you live in a HUGE city, and even then it's probably highly sale resistant. It robs you of the ability to really control the car and the turbo. I've driven several automatics, and I have to say, for the price difference, if you really want an automatic, save the money, and just buy a 2.5RS.
i've driven an auto wrx and i noticed that the tranny will shift early into the next gear if your not flooring it. If you do floor it it will remain in the lower gear until you ease up on the gas pedal. it really doesnt give the driver control of the power.
2nd thought....
exactly as you noted, not many people drive auto WRX, for exactly the reasons above. It's silly to pay 26 grand for a car that performs marginally better than a 17K 2.5RS with A/T.
What you really should consider if you're set on AT is a SAABaru WRX.....er.... 92X. Those sell so poorly that they're giving the darn things away, so you can probably get a smokin' deal on one, and it's the same car.
If it fits what you need, and you really want the sedan, and the subaru look, then go for it. Just understand that it'll be very difficult to re-sell that car, becase everyone here, and NASIOC, and essentially most people that consider a car like WRX strongly prefer stick.
My buddy was trying to get rid of an Audi S4 with an automatic (similar enthusiast performance car), and 4 dealers told him they wouldn't even take the car in trade (in 3.5 years in the car business, I've never told a customer I wouldn't take their trade, nor do I know of anyone else doing this, but I'm not sure we'd take an auto WRX unless we basically stole it). He finally sold it private party for about $20K, when the private party KBB was $28K.

I've always wondered what the point is with getting a sports car with an auto, it just takes all the fun out of it. If your going to buy a WRX definetly go with the manual, not only are you killing your resale, but it defeats the whole purpose of getting a performance car. Anywho, go with the standard.

I would stay away from the auto. It definitely slows the car down, and as stated above, makes a lot of people pass right over the car if they're looking to buy a WRX. I know a couple guys who have owned auto WRX' and though it was super on the freeway and in traffic, they rarely, if ever, took their car to the track. Aside from being consistent at the drag strip, I doubt the auto would do too well at autox or a road course.
Plus all your buddies will make fun of you for driving an auto. Seriously.

Hey a guy by the callname of Infek from the Hawaii I-Club crew has an auto.
He probably has the ONLY 12 second Auto WRX and he does Auto-X as well. It's heavily modified of course but it is a beast!

how much hp can the auto handle? the 5 speed has issues at what 300hp?
if the ride had a twin scroll turbo, there would be less issues with getting the power when needed. granted that's like a 6 grand mod.
