anyone have any information on how to replace the front axel? Is it a big job that i should just let the mechanic do or can i do this myself?

 

It's very easy. Remove wheel; remove axle nut (32mm), disconnect strut from hub (mark the alignment bolt first). Remove end of axle from hub. Use screwdriver or some such tool to hammer out the pin on the tranny side. Pull it out.

Should be quick and easy if you have a 32mm axle nut socket. and a nice big breaker bar.
