2006 sti reliability question.
Only one problem here and it is probably less of a problem and more of a good little warning.
On my 06 STi when I hit 120 or so or if I am doing 90+ with a strong head wind, there is a weird hum that happens. I thought I saw something posted about some skid plate or something that resonates but it is no huge deal. I just left it as a good sanity check to help me slow down.... LOL

Haha im fairly sure that humming noise is from the huge bump on the hood that protrudes into the 120+mph wind....
it scared the crap out of me the first time i heard it i thought i broke something

From: FIXED the Hack: IWSTI>iclub - really, was the hack necessary; as in why the insecurity? Most people on this forum don't even have an STI- so that site isn't meant for them anyway- damn communists and their free-speech stifling ways

Wind noise answer: https://www.i-club.com/forums/showth...ghlight=triple
Squeaky/rattle noise from rear: comes from where the spoiler is bolted down to the trunk, and not from the rear glass window.
Whirring noise: comes from the center differential which is also the transmission.
Funky noise coming from rear seat area when starting the car: comes from the fuel pump which is located beneath the rear seat area.
Clutch noise: will squeak for you (maybe) whenever depressed and released
Glove box: will rattle (maybe)
All these noises are normal, and are only heard because the car has basically NO sound deadening installed-the car is built purely for one thing: PERFORMANCE. As such, it will have all sorts of idiosyncrasies that you'll eventually get used to the longer you own an Impreza. I know for the money, it should be problem free, right, but note that even expensive cars (i.e. made in Germany autos) have all sorts of build quality issues (see the latest Consumer Reports). None of these issues impact the STI's reliability or performance. And if these issues are important enough for you to question purchasing such an awesome bang for the buck vehicle, get a TL or G35 instead, since both are in the same price range as the STI. And if you happen to be considering the Evo, then all I can say is that you deserve the interior in that line if you end up going in that direction (although I will, albeit shamefully admit that I LOVE the seats in the MR, and only grudgingly accept the ones that I have).

I agree with your reasoning here. I have had my 06 STI for almost 2 months now and put almost 3000 miles on. I have noticed some squeaks and rattles. My clutch has a squeak and a slight rattle in the drivers side door. I know that this is not in any way a luxury sport car so I really don't care about these minor things. My previous ride was a 01 GTI so I do miss some of the convenience features but you have to sacrifice something for price/performance.

Exactly what I was going to say , except I gave up my 02 C240 for my current 06 Sti . I'm used to the ratteling though , I used to have a civic project car. One thing I never understand why buy a race car and worry about rattles , the most important thing should be engine and drivetrain reliability . Well atleast that's what's important to me .
well I have had my 06 sti since august 05 and got 18k miles on it. I makes some little noises here and there. But for the dozan or so autoX's it been to I don't mind. I had my motor and tranny mounts replaced under warranty and a broken wheel lock. So far I am happy with it. No tranny problems or motor problems.

Just my problems on a 2 day old car.
Laters....

I found the tools that subaru supplied made some noise.
Check that the screw jack is mounted properly in its holder.
me too...
The past 2 days when leaving my home or work or parking lot; while driving. I have heard some odd sounds from the back. I'm not sure what it is but I'll keep my ear out and see if I can figure it out. I've had my car 3 months, 2500 miles give or take 100 and the noise is just now kicking in.

STi's have a reputation for noisy rear struts especially 04 STi's. It's a normal thing that isn't a potential mechanical failure, you'll know when it becomes to that, trust me.
On my 02 wrx it was the mirrors. Folding them back got rid of the hum, and looked sharp, but you wouldn't be safe driving like that all the time.
Others have put tape, or some such thing, into the gap where the mirrors fold back, and then popped the mirrors back out.
There never was a problem with a hum from the early wrx stock hood scoop.
I don't know about the 1/2 foot high ones used since then. To my eye, they resemble air brakes, with the disadvantage of not being retractable.
