2005 STI: 4th Gear Grinding
Hi All,
My car currently has 11K miles and my tranny is starting to grind everytime I shift to 4th gear. I want to take this to the dealership but am not sure if this would be covered under warranty. I believe the car still has the 35k b to b warranty and the 65K powertrain.
Can someone confirm whether I may have a hard time getting this repair covered under warranty? In other words, can the dealership point the finger away from themselves and say that I was driving the car out of Subaru normal standards to cause the damage?
By the way, the car is completely stock with the exception of H&R springs. All help is greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Well your car is under warranty so i say go to the dealership and get it fixed. Grinding gears is not a good thing and usually a sign that your shifting improperly. I have 40k on my 04' and have never heard a grind so im not sure. Like i said it wont hurt to take it to the stealership and see what they say.

Thanks for the Input Fender. I just bought the car 2 months ago with it having 9700 miles on it already. I barely even drove the car, but I'm assuming the previous owner may have molested the hell out of the car. Anyways, I'll take it to the dealer and hope they don't try give me a hassle. Thanks again!

UPDATE!! Subaru WILL NOT cover the 4th gear synchro under warranty for the simple fact that my car is lowered. They say that it is a "CLEAR INDICATION THAT THIS CAR HAS BEEN ABUSED AND POSSIBLY RACED!" LOL! They based this strictly on the fact that my suspension was modified. They didn't even rip apart my tranny and said it was "DUE TO ABUSE!" The car only has 11.5k miles. At this point, all I have to say is KCUF Subaru. They build a HIGH PERFORMANCE "RACE" car yet they expect you to drive it like an old lady Hahhahah! And if you don't drive like a senior citizen, they wash their hands of any malfunction.
Thus, I'm trading in my car this afternoon. I've already secured a loan, just need to check out the car I'm trading it in for.

It actually depends on what the Subaru Representative that comes out and inspects the parts says. The dealership MUST consult the Subaru Tech Line in order to process coverage under warranty. Also, the dealership MUST disclose any and all modifications on the vehicle to the Tech Line because they will eventually send out a Local Rep to assess vehicle in person prior to making a final decision as to whether the damage was due to abuse or manufacture defect.
So the rule of thumb here guys is Subaru WILL do everything and anything they possibly can to get out of paying for any malfuntion. Thats why the blame my suspension as the cause. They did in fact state that lowering the car DID NOT void the warranty, yet it "IMPLIES ABUSE AND MOST LIKELY RACING!" Pathetic, illogical and over generalized

I don't know. When I had a WRX before my STi, it had springs, sways, strut braces, turbo back exhaust, engine mgmt. etc. The dealership I went to fixed any and all things that was covered under warranty without any questions asked or assumptions. Sucks man, sorry.
