2002 WRX, good buy?
Alright well with all my aspirations of getting a slightly used 2004 or a new 2005 and having a $400-$450 per mo car payment easily I drove into my dealer, Patriot Subaru to see if they had any new stuff. My salesperson pulls me out back to point out something he just took in, a 2002 WR Blue. The car has scratches, it isn't flawless by any stretch of the imagination but they know it's history, where it has been. The car has 63,000 miles on it, JDM headlamps, short throw shifter, STi exhaust and the upgraded rims from 2002, he bought it brand new... I think they are OZ Racing, they don't look bad at all but are they a good wheel or just el cheapo? I didn't know there was an option for a different wheel but what do I know. The car is a non smoker 5speed and they have not put a price on it just yet, they just got it in. The guy who owned it first traded it in for an STi, and the second owner did the same... all through this dealership, and the car comes with 4 studded snow tires on steel rims.
I am assuming they are going to be asking close to if not about $16,000 for it. The way I see it, the miles are not too high, that is low mileage to a lot of people and it is still a fairly new car being a 2002. I would probobly opt for the extended warrantee just in case, I know these cars are often abused but regardless of the scratches and the fact that I hate the cloudy tail lights of the 2002 and 2003's I think it would clean up nicely and my payment would probobly be close to $80-100 per mo. cheaper... I am wondering if this car is too high mileage to make plans for, to mod. I don't have any huge plans but I would want to turn it into a very well thought out, well done, well rounded car... it may not be the fastest WRX when I am done but it will be done right, quicker then most but made to be a clean car. This car is an excuse for me to be more comfortable with what I paid for instead of going all out even though I can afford an 04, or an 02 with 63k, I would be able to have more money for mods, or more money left in my wallet after a paycheck. I like the idea also that it has some things done to it already, never any engine mods though but I think that is a blessing in disquise... is the STi exhaust even close to equivilent to an aftermarket turboback?

Just depends on what you really want. I also could have bought an older used WRX but in the past all I've owned are used cars and really wanted brand new. So I got my 05 WRX. I pay $401 a month. So not as much money left on my paycheck as before, but at least I get to start this car from scratch
16k?
You can do much better than 16K for an 02 with 60K miles on it looking at private party classifieds here or NASIOC. That car is off factory warranty, so you're probably looking at another grand for a warranty, which you have a chance of having a dealer refuse to honor because the car has mods (lots of people have nightmare stories about refused warranty work for even minor mods).
That being said, if you're really happy with this dealer, which you seem to be, and you think they'll take care of you if something comes up, then it may be worth paying a little extra for the piece of mind....
out of curiosity, have they appraised your Exploder yet? or are you planning on selling that privately?
