1990 (Legacy) A/C problem

My '90 subaru legacy has a terrrific air conditioner, except for one problem... it runs intermittently. I've had the coolant checked and it's fine and dandy. In the past, if I whacked on the dash board it would get cool again. I can hear and feel the engine drag down when it engages. But as time goes on, it's getting harder and harder to get it to come back on.
It was 104 degrees F yesterday and I thought I was gonna die from the heat with just the windows open.
Anyway, when its engaged its really nice and cold.
Is it okay to pull the dash board area around the center vents out and see if there is some sort of connection not connecting or I am going to make more problems by doing that??? (My son would be doing it, not me.) We don't have a repair manual so I'm hesitant.
Help!
